STRENSALL overhauled Racquets 2's seemingly unassailable mid-season lead in their final match of the Tyke Petroleum Men's Tennis League division eight season.

Promotion-chasing visitors Alne & Tollerton 1 were bolstered by prolific young star Josh Hunt from their seconds but it was to no avail as a determined home side proved unbeatable over nine rubbers and gave Strensall the trophy by a slender four-point margin.

John Long and Daniel Simmonite were the pick of the trophy-stealers with 3-24.

Alne will have to start over again in division eight next year and their second team had no better luck as they inadvertently fielded an ineligible player at Dunnington 2 to gift their hosts an unexpected final win.

Wigginton's big hitters Ben and Angus Bradshaw tore into a makeweight York with 3-31 to set up a fantastic division one finale against front runners Poppleton this Sunday - a game that will decide the title in what has been the closest men's contest in more than a decade.

Former title-tilters York had had to call up four players from their seconds because of injury and absence and, although they put up a fight, were no match for a Wigginton team hungry for their first league title since 1996.

Racquets held aloft the division two trophy with a big win at plucky Fulford 2.

In the absence of their captain, the day’s joint top-scorers with 3-33 were John Hargreaves and Mark Hinchcliffe. The Harrogatians ended their awe-inspiring season with a 100 per cent winning record, nearly 150 points awarded and over one thousand games to the good.

They’ll compete for the first time in division one next year alongside rivals The Academy, after parallel journeys through the men’s league since the two clubs joined in 2012.

Harlow boasted two unbeaten pairs against Wetherby 2, but afforded their visitors just their second win of the season through a first round injury to Carlos Horner.

Boston Spa edged a slim early advantage in a keenly-contested division four title-decider at Appleton Roebuck 1.

A rare start by Rob Jones undoubtedly swung the match back to the ‘Bucks, as he partnered Paul Dadvar to a match-winning 3-26.

Will Parkins’ and Gordon Milne’s subsequent 3-32 in Boston Spa’s 11-1 final match defeat of Bubwith 2 proved just a season-ending consolation as Roebuck claimed the division four shield by a meagre six points, taking Spa with them into the new-look division three next year.

Rufforth included a Knaresborough player in their final line-up, a mistake which gifted York 4 their first win of 2015. The Cliftn Parkers will still kick off next season in division seven.

A gutsy performance and a makeshift line-up couldn't help Wigginton 3 win the ten points they needed against Copmanthorpe 2 to save them from relegation.

It’s York 3 in sixth place, with an average of over four points per match, who won the level three reprieve - bettering Bubwith 2 and York 4 in division four. York 3 will switch and play in division four next year.

Sheriff Hutton earned a well-deserved promotion to division five after Wilberfoss 2 conceded their final match.
