MOTHER and daughter team Ruth and Rebecca Hill triumphed in the IT Sports ladies tennis tournament.

The Pocklington duo defeated York's Jill Le Pla and Siobhan Gilfillan 6-2 in the final to lift the trophy for the first time.

Twelve couples from eight different clubs competed for the trophy - now in its 25th year - in a competition organised by York Tennis Club.

The Hills had beaten defending champions Jill Rounce (Bubwith) and Jill McCreedy (Fulford) 5-2 in the semi-finals to reach the showpiece game while Le Pla and Gilfillan, a former winner, saw off teammates Caroline White and Wendy Stirke.

Group match highlights included Rufforth’s Kate Lewis and Sue Yoward’s tight 3-2 win over Bishopthorpe’s Jane Parkin and Fran Critchley, Fulford’s Jo Middleton and Wendy Wong’s comprehensive victory over teammates Wendy Cook and Pauline Craddock and York’s Kathryn Place and Faye Chapman’s defeat of Starbeck’s Ali Wales and Christine Nodding.
