TEENAGER George Davies is celebrating a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The 17-year-old Knaresborough thrower, a member of City of York Athletic Club, produced 68.23 metres to finish runner-up in the javelin.

Davies was only behind Mohd Hadish of India, who threw a huge 79.29m to secure the gold, but was comfortably clear in second spot as he grabbed one of ten medals won by England at the event in Samoa.

Paul Wilson, head throws and multi-events coach at COYAC, hailed the youngster's feat, saying: "This is an outstanding achievement for any athlete – firstly for him to be picked for England and then to win one of the medals.

"He has just turned 17 and, next year, his target is the world juniors. Long term, he is going to go for the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

"Rio (the Olympic Games next year) will come too soon for him but he will look to progress from this."
