KNAVESMIRE School finished runners-up in the Drax Cup north area finals at Dunnington CC.

The team were beaten 142-125 in the final in a fiercely fought match against last year’s winners, Lingfield Primary, from Marton near Middlesbrough.

Knavesmire reached the semis after remaining unbeaten in their group with strong wins over Wheatlands, from Redcar, (120-158) and Harrogate side Pannal (163-138).

They faced Scarborough outfit Cayton in the semi-final and continued their solid batting with a 127-165 victory. Lingfield beat Barlby 152–130 to reach the final.

Dunnington, meanwhile, could only manage one win in the group stage - beating Richmond Methodist by a single run (165-164) in the last fixture.

Lingfield will now play in the 2015 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley Cricket Ground for the second time. The event takes place July 10 with the four finalist teams taking to the pitch before the match between Yorkshire Vikings and the Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast competition.

The Drax Cup is the biggest Under-9s cricket competition in the UK and is open to schools from across Yorkshire and Teesside. The competition is sponsored by Drax and organised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board, Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association and The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation.
