JOHN PARRY recovered from a treacherous turn to remain in the hunt to make the cut at the US Open golf tournament.
The Knaresborough-born player carded an opening two-over-par round of 72 - helped by two birdies in his last four holes - at the Chambers Bay course in Washington State.
Parry, starting on the tenth hole as the second group out, got off to a steady opening with seven straight pars.
But he dropped his first shot at the par three 17th and that led to a run of four straight bogeys as he slipped to four-over-par.
Parry then steadied the ship with three straight pars before picking up his first birdie of the day with a ten foot putt at the 494-yard par four sixth.
He then picked up another shot at the monster 602-yard par five eighth as he continued to dig in. A par at the ninth carded an inward 35.
Parry hit 11 of 14 fairways and 12 of 18 greens - with 33 putts - as he settled in mid-table among the early starters as the year's second major got under way.
