ASHLEY HUGILL was crowned the York Masters snooker champion after a commanding 5-1 win over Jordan Worobec.

Hugill, a European Tour player and an aspiring professional, was the pre-tournament favourite but Worobec was trying to crown an exceptional season that saw him reach his third major final.

The successful competition, now in its second year, is held on a World Snooker standard tournament table above keen player Adrian Barraclough’s Quickslide windows showroom in Layerthorpe.

A safety battle kept the first frame in the balance and it came down to the final few colours.

Hugill potted the yellow and landed perfectly on the green - sealing a 56-32 success.

Worobec hit back immediately in the second, upping his game with a number of long pots to level the match. But that was as close as he came.

After leaving the cueball only a few inches from the baulk cushion when breaking off in the third frame, Hugill showed his class by potting an excellent long red, landing on the black, and compiling an excellent break of 60.

He then put together a 38 break in the fourth, limiting Worobec’s scoring chances again, to take a 3-1 lead into the mid-session interval.

A crucial 48 break near the end of frame five made it 4-1 and, while Worobec was doing everything he could to halt the Hugill charge he could not respond to the heavy scoring and tight safety play.

He looked to have pulled a frame back in the sixth - leading by 13 points with only blue, pink and black left on the table. After missing the blue, though, Hugill had his chance to take the match and took the title with a black off the spot.

Hugill also took the overall prize for the highest break, with a 112 clearance earlier in the tournament against Mark Hodson.

Hugill beat Clive Whyte 4-1 in the semi-final, while Worobec came back from 3-2 down to beat Kevin Gall 4-3 in the other.

The presentations were made by tournament organiser Richard Lillie.
