BOOTHAM’S Matt Smith came from behind to defeat Heworth’s Jordan Worobec 3-1 to win the York Conservative Clubs’ Fosters Snooker Cup for the first time, writes Alan Reed .

Worobec was attempting to win his second trophy in a week after his victory in the Scruton Cup final, but Smith proved too strong in an entertaining, quickfire final.

Worobec, playing off a minus-16 handicap made an early 32 break, which ended when he potted the blue but went in-off.

Smith, playing off plus-one, replied with breaks of eight and 16 to take the lead 46-39. Worobec hit back with a 30 break, leaving Smith needing green to black to win the frame, but he missed the brown and Worobec won the frame 84-49.

In the second frame, Smith moved to 31-2 in front, only for Worobec to make breaks of 28 and 13 to lead 48-31.

Smith regained the lead with a break of 22 and, after a series of snookers, the match changed when Worobec jumped the cue ball off the table attempting a deep screw on the brown and Smith took the next three colours to win 75-62.

The third frame saw Smith hit a 28 break to lead 45-0, and Worobec could only manage eight points before Smith made a 39 break and Worobec conceded with the score at 84-8.

Worobec started the fourth frame with a 15 break, only for Smith to reply with breaks of 18, six and 38 to go 79-15 up.

Worobec claimed two of the last three reds, but he failed to add the blue and conceded the frame at 79-17.

The trophy and awards were presented by Colin Robinson, including the highest break prize to Clive Whyte for his 79 break earlier in the competition.

Champions Acomb cruise to Fulford win

CHAMPIONS Acomb rounded off their successful York Conservative Clubs’ Faber Shield Billiards League season with a 5-1 win at Fulford.

Dan Potter, with a 56 break, beat Fulford’s Glen Mountain (23 break) 150-94 to complete an unbeaten first season at billiards.

Trevor Ventress had a tough battle against Wayne Puleston before getting home 150-140, while Paul Holmes continued Acomb’s run by pipping Tom Lewis 150-142 in another tight frame.

Terry Ward hit back for Fulford with breaks of 75 and 43 in a 150-119 victory over John Ashwell, but Richard Lillie held off Alan Reed, winning 150-130 to give Acomb the aggregate point.

The match between Heworth and Bootham produced the highest break of the season - a 106 from Darren Clark, narrowly eclipsing Gary Rogers’ 105.

With only one match left to play, Clark is in a strong position to claim the high break award.

Clark also recorded breaks of 56 and 23 in a convincing 150-79 victory over Matt Smith.

Rogers had previously got Heworth off to a good start, beating Alf Appleby 150-69 and making breaks of 42 and 46.

Ian Robinson pulled one back for Bootham with a 150-148 win over Brian Birch, Tim Fillingham (29 break) tried his best to stop Mark Winskill, but breaks of 39, 29, 33 and 27 earned Winskill a 150-101 victory.

Paul Mahoney won the last frame for Bootham, beating Keith Watkinson 150-111, but Heworth also won the aggregate point and finished 4-2 victors.

The battle for the Cameo Engraving player of the year award will not be decided until the final match between Heworth and Bootham.

Rogers needs to win his last game to overtake Mick Borg as they both have played 11 and won nine, but Borg’s Acomb have completed all their fixtures.
