YORK ‘A’ qualified for the Yorkshire Over-55s League Challenge Cup after rivals Redcar were unable to field a team at North Cave White.

The league rule for a defaulting team had to come into play, giving North Cave White 12 points. They then beat Redcar 6-0 on points at home to leave Redcar one point below York ‘A’ in fourth place, with White a further point behind in fifth.

The Thanet Road club are now through the Challenge Cup at New Earswick IBC on Thursday, April 2.

League winners Featherstone ‘A’ and runners-up Hornsea will also compete, along with division two champions Huddersfield.

York ‘B’ put up a great display against Selby in their final league game after losing the away leg 45-26.

Alan Potter, Tony Butterfield, John Butler and Ken Robinson had pulled themselves back into the game from 14-7 down to 17-14 down with four ends to play. They were unable to close the gap any further as they dropped singles on the last four ends.

John Birch, Ray Wynn, Noel Mallen and Richard Jessop won three of the last four ends but the damage had already been done and they lost 24-12.

At home, Harley Wenham, Alan Yoward, Dave Clayton and Mike Snowden were on top form as they lost only four ends from the 15th and led 23-6 on their way to a memorable 31-13 victory.

Charlie Arnett, Brian Fannon, Allan May and Ron Munro were in with a chance of claiming a win and the aggregate points from the match as they led 13-11 as Snowden’s rink were winning comfortably.

However, they laid five shots and the Selby skip killed the end, then took the initiative to win five of the last six ends and take the game 26-15.

YORKSHIRE Ladies are flying high after an amazing 119-91 victory over a strong Norfolk team in the Atherley Trophy semi-final at Boston Indoor Bowls Club.

The White Rose side won five out of the six rinks and they now play Devon in the final at Melton Mowbray IBC on Saturday, April 11.

Yorkshire led 29-21 after five ends then 54-43 after ten before taking hold of the game over the next five ends as they extended their advantage to 22 shots to lead 84-62.

Kath Delacoe, Katie Baxter, Eve Dayes and Beryl Alderson were 4-2 down after three ends before winning six on the trot to lead 15-4, They only lost five more ends as they won 21-10.

Linda Wiles, June Clayton, Betty Richardson and Linda Harrison were 10-8 up after 11 ends, and they only lost three more after that in winning 20-11.

Lydia Cutmore, Lynda Parker, Zoe Eagles and Helen Walker had their game virtually sealed after only losing five ends out of 16 and leading 19-6 before finishing 23-14 victors.

Joan Jackson, Carol Banks, Melanie Brooke and Carol Instone got off to a good start, leading 10-1 after four ends, helped by a six on the second. They also had their game in the bag by the 16th end as they led 20-8 on their way to a 22-15 victory.

Hayley Macdonald, Sue Armstrong, Danni Martinson and Sue Allen were 12-10 ahead after 15 ends. They dropped a six but hit back to lead 20-16 with two ends to play and finished up winning 21-18.

Hollie Baxter, Pat Walker, Carol Sarvant and Helen Wood were up against a rink which included three international players and skipped by Rebecca Field, who used to play for York.

Field’s side won 12 of the opening 14 ends to lead 19-3, but Wood’s team bounced back by winning all but two of the remaining ends to go down 23-12.

On Saturday at noon, York play New Earswick in the Yorkshire Ladies League. On Sunday at Thanet Road, starting at 10am, the Hebden Challenge Cup takes place with the opening games between New Earswick and Leeds, and York and North Cave.
