SPORTING achievement in the city will be recognised in the Active York Sports Awards, which are were launched in partnership with The Press.

Below are details of categories and criteria for the awards:

Young Male Sportsperson (under 18)
The aim of this award is to recognise the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the young sportsmen in York. Nominees will have achieved significant success at county, regional, national or international level.

Young Female Sportsperson (under 18)
The aim of this award is to recognise the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the young sportswomen in York. Nominees will have achieved significant success at county, regional, national or international level.

Young Disabled Sportsperson (under 18)
The aim of this award is to recognise the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the young sportsmen and women in disability in York. Nominees will have achieved significant success at county, regional, national or international level.

Team/Club Award
This open age award aims to recognise a local team or club, based in York that have had a successful year competing within its sport in the last year. This team could be recognised for the impact, development, organisation and wide ranging success.

Award for Student Sportsperson
Nominees must be in full time education and studying a recognised qualification within a college or university within the city. This award aims to recognise the sporting success of an individual who has achieved when playing or volunteering in their sport. They will have enjoyed success and had impact at institutional, community/ local, regional or national level.

Sportsman
The aim of this award is to celebrate the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the best of York’s sporting talent. The winner of this award will have achieved success at a national or international level in the last year. Male athletes from all recognised sports aged over 18 are eligible for this award.

Sportswoman
The aim of this award is to celebrate the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the best of York’s sporting talent. The winner of this award will have achieved success at a national or international level in the last year. Female athletes from all recognised sports aged over 18 are eligible for this award.

Disabled Sportsperson
The aim of this award is to celebrate the commitment, dedication and success achieved by the best of York’s sporting talent. The winner of this award will have achieved success at regional, national or international level in the last year. This is an open age award and athletes from all recognised sports are eligible for this award.

Young Sportsperson of the Year (under 18)
This accolade is awarded to an individual/s who has demonstrated total commitment and dedication to sport and who has enjoyed sporting success in the last 12 months. They should be an ambassador for sport among their peer group and whose impact can be regarded as an inspiration to others.

Sportsperson of the Year
This accolade is awarded to an individual/s who has demonstrated total commitment and dedication to their sport, or sport in general and who has enjoyed sporting success in the last 12 months. They should be an ambassador for sport among their peer group whose impact can be regarded as an inspiration to others.

Coach/Volunteer Award
This award is designed to recognise the important and inspirational role of coaches in York who work with athletes within the city. It seeks to recognise the commitment, dedication and impact their involvement within their sport, their club, their team or on an individual has had.

Active School Award
This award aims to recognise schools where sport and activity have positively impacted upon the school environment through the involvement of pupils, teachers, coaches, parents and volunteers. The Active School Award will recognise all involved in ongoing initiatives and events that have made a significant contribution to school sport and to a positive healthy environment within the last school year.

Active Workplace Award
This award aims to recognise organisations where sport and activity have positively impacted upon the workplace with positive effect upon employees. The Active Workplace Award will collectively recognise the impact of ongoing initiatives and events that have encouraged sport and activity in and around the workplace, within the last 12 months.

• Geographical area – to be eligible you must live, attend school or train within City of York Council’s boundaries.

• Period of qualification – one year period running from March 2013 to February 2014.
