SUBSTITUTE Robert Snodgrass triggered an explosive finish to a slow-burning Yorkshire derby in front of 33,622 – the Championship’s biggest crowd of the season at Elland Road.
Pre-season injury ruled the Scot out of Leeds United’s fine start to the campaign but his first home appearance lit the blue touchpaper of an uninspiring game.
Snodgrass had a major role in the Whites’ late winner. When Stephen Jordan failed to deal with a hopeful ball forward in the 84th minute, Snodgrass ploughed forward and cut the ball back for Bradley Johnson to seal Leeds’ first win against the Bramall Lane men in 17 years.
Within a few minutes he received a red card for a second caution after blocking Leon Britton.
Ten-man Leeds managed to see out the rest of the game, although were grateful to the woodwork for keeping out Jon Ertl’s header after a well-worked corner in injury-time.
Jamie Ward was sent off in the dying seconds for an over-the-top challenge against Neil Kilkenny.
