Picture Editor, whose first task of the season saw him setting the pace for his brilliant stable-mate Frankel before fading out of contention, can prove himself a useful horse in his own right at Goodwood tomorrow.

The Henry Cecil-trained colt won two of his three races last term as a juvenile, including one over ten furlongs.

It was, therefore, no surprise he found the seven furlongs of the Greenham Stakes at Newbury too sharp for him on his reappearance.

After towing Frankel through the early stages, he was found out for speed when the chips were down and dropped away to finish fifth, beaten 13 lengths by the horse who went on to spread-eagle his rivals in the 2,000 Guineas.

Tomorrow, Picture Editor steps up to one mile and three furlongs in the IBA Cocked Hat Stakes and will have Tom Queally back on board. A bold bid is anticipated by the Newmarket representative, despite the presence of the useful-looking Badeel, the mount of Frankie Dettori.

David Nicholls, successful with Inxile at Longchamp on Sunday, sends Askaud to Goodwood for the second time in a fortnight and the three-year-old merits attention in the Paul Spencer 50th Birthday Handicap.

On his seasonal reappearance, Askaud finished a good second to Beatrice Aurore and a reproduction of that performance would put him in with a real shout of going one better in this nine-furlong contest.

Unfortunately, the handicapper has raised the North Yorkshire raider 6lb for that display, so he will need to step up again.

Beatrice Aurore turns out 53 minutes later in the Casco Height Of Fashion Fillies’ Stakes and is entitled to go well in this Listed contest.

Preference, however, is for Imperial Pippin, one of John Gosden’s two runners, who made a very likeable debut at Newbury when winnning a maiden race last month.

The fact she is being promoted to Listed company so briskly suggests she is highly regarded and she is certainly an interesting runner in the hands of stable jockey William Buick.

Charles Bishop, who created a good impression at Ripon on Sunday when riding a winner, renews his acquaintance with Athwaab in the TurfTv.co.uk Apprentice Handicap.

Bishop has ridden Noel Quinlan’s filly to two wins in three mounts, most recently at Brighton, where the partnership swept to a decisive victory. A 6lb penalty may not be enough to prevent the duo coming out on top once more.

The promising Glee (2.00) and recent winner Saborido (3.45) are also worth watching at the Sussex course.

At Lingfield, Norton jockey Tom Eaves has good prospects of making his long journey worthwhile by winning on Bonnie Prince Blue in the Tandridge Selling Stakes.

The Ian McInnes-trained eight-year-old is best known as an all-weather performer, and he is a previous winner over this course and distance. He comes out well in this race on ratings, and is awarded the nap vote.
