TOMORROW’S Southwell meeting sees the welcome comeback of former champion jockey Seb Sanders, whose 2008 campaign was cut severely short after he shattered a leg in a crashing summer fall at Chester.

And it also promises to be an equally memorable day for North Yorkshire trainer Paul Midgley.

The Westow-based handler, who sent out a winner on this course earlier in the week, saddles Smarty Socks in the Book Tickets Online At southwell-racecourse.co.uk Handicap and Jamie Moriarty’s mount is napped to come up trumps.

A shrewd purchase out of Francis Crowley’s Irish yard, Smarty Socks is already a four-time winner for Midgley, who has really found the key to the five-year-old.

His latest success over this course and distance came after a winter break, and was achieved by a head from Flores Sea after he had made a tardy start.

Very much at home on this surface – he has won three times here – Smarty Socks can carry on the good work by obliging again.

Midgley has several runners on the card with solid chances and Ming Vase could well give him a winning start to the meeting in the Southwell Racecourse For Conferences Apprentice Handicap.

The accomplished Paul Pickard teams up with Ming Vase, who, while not the easiest of horses to win with, is capable enough at this modest level and is a previous scorer over this course and distance.

General Tufto is worthy of particular attention in the Play Golf At Southwell Golf Club Handicap.

Charles Smith’s ultra- consistent gelding won well on this course on Thursday and, as that was an apprentices’ race, he escapes a penalty tomorrow. He should be hard to beat.

Seb Sanders has just a single mount on the card, Special Cuvee in the southwell- racecourse.co.uk Handicap.

Blinkered for the first time, the three-year-old merits respect as he bids to give Sanders a memorable comeback winner.

Sir Mark Prescott’s number one jockey has worked hard on his fitness in advance of his return to action and is gearing himself up for the start of the turf campaign, which is now under a week away.

Much as I would love to see Special Cuvee win, I favour the claims of recent winner Captain Risk, the mount of Nicky Mackay, and trained by Marco Botti.

At Huntingdon’s National Hunt meeting, Horseford Hill (2.10) is an interesting newcomer with Tony McCoy on board in the opening Racing UK Maiden Hurdle. Nicky Henderson’s gelding will not need to be anything out of the ordinary to come out on top.

Howard Johnson’s useful Glencree (2.40) and Saga de Tercey (5.10), a very interesting newcomer from the Alan Swinbank yard, are two others to keep on the right side of.
