The curtain comes down today on York's 2007 campaign and Tim Walford is aiming to pick up deserved compensation with The Grey Berry before he comes under the hammer at Newmarket Sales later this month.

Sheriff Hutton-based Walford had hoped to run his stable star in last Saturday's Cambridgeshire Handicap, but The Grey Berry missed the cut in that oversubscribed £100,000 event. Instead, he goes for today's Parsonage House Hotel Handicap in a bid to further enhance his potential before his appearance in front of the auctioneer.

The Grey Berry, worth a lot more now than the 9,500 guineas Walford paid for him nearly a year ago, has won four races this season, the latest coming at Ayr last month when he overcame trouble in running on his first attempt over ten furlongs. He tackles the same distance today and, with Kevin Darley in the saddle, this three-year-old is napped to underline his talent.

The feature race on the card is the £35,000 paddypower.com Sprint Trophy, which has attracted a whole host of well-known local sprinters. The pick of them today could be Fonthill Road, trained by Richard Fahey.

An admirable fifth in last month's Ayr Gold Cup, which he won last year, Fonthill Road has since finished an excellent ninth in a 30-plus strong field for a big Ascot handicap over seven furlongs. Clearly in great heart as he heads into the autumn, Fonthill Road can come out on top in this tightly-knit handicap.

Among his main dangers are his stable-mate Philharmonic, a recent Beverley winner, Tim Easterby's former top sprinter Somnus, and Zomerlust, from the John Quinn yard, and the winner of the Sky Bet Dash on this course in July.

The Stowe Family Silver Jubilee Rockingham Stakes, a Listed race, with £25,000 up for grabs, will be fought out by some useful juveniles and Fahey could again have a major say, courtesy of Mister Hardy.

Although he has a few pounds to find with two or three of his rivals, Mister Hardy underlined his well-being with a stellar effort to be just beaten out of a place in last Saturday's Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy. He has definite each-way prospects here.

In the opening Woodford Reserve Bourbon Handicap, Nanton, a creditable sixth at Redcar last weekend, is selected to oblige for Flaxton trainer Noel Wilson, while stamina will be at a premium in the Shepherd Group Handicap over two-and-a-quarter miles, a perfect test for Gallileo Figaro, a winner here this summer.
