MALTON trainer Richard Fahey and jockey Tony Hamilton celebrated a double on the first day of Doncaster's St Leger Festival with victories for both Stamp Hill and Andok.

Stamp Hill was a gutsy 5-1 winner of the seven furlong Howcroft Industrial Supplies Handicap while 13/8 favourite Andok won the Nursery Handicap.

Fahey said: "It's always great to register a couple of winners early on at the St Leger meeting. They aren't winning too far either so the handicapper has got the races right!

"Stamp Hill has been unlucky this season but it's a nice consolation for his owner to win here. He is a good hardy professional racehorse. He is the sort of horse we like."

Fahey, who registered his 150th winner of the year earlier this week, said: "Greed is good, you always want more. Last year's total (235 winners) is a long way off and we, sadly, have a lot of badly handicapped horses at the moment. That is the problem when they win. Some of them just can't win this year."

Hamilton was all smiles after Stamp Hill's victory, saying: "I'd always thought I'd win but he just pulled up in front for a few strides. He's been in some hot races to be fair and it's nice to get some confidence back into him."

Rebecca Bastiman, based at Cowthorpe, trained the 14-1 winner of the final race at Doncaster today, Singeur, ridden by Daniel Tudhope.
