HOME OF THE BRAVE can gain compensation for his recent Goodwood defeat by lifting the Betfred Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

Hugo Palmer had high hopes for his charge in the Lennox Stakes just over two weeks ago but he found fellow Godolphin runner Dutch Connection far too strong, going down by a length and three-quarters at the line.

There was no shame in that defeat as Dutch Connection had finished second in the race the previous year and has since gone on to run with credit in the Prix Maurice de Gheest over a slightly inadequate trip.

Home Of The Brave was one of two runners for Palmer that day, along with Gifted Master, and given that both like to lead from the front, one was always going to have to compromise and adopt different tactics.

Home Of The Brave did just that but it looked as though taking a back seat did not really suit him as he did not settle too well and eventually did not have enough toe to reel in Dutch Connection at the end.

The Starspangledbanner colt will surely be allowed to bowl along in front this time around and a return to that style of running can help him return to the kind of form that saw him hold off the reopposing Convey in a Haydock Group Three back in May.

He has upwards of 2lb in hand of each of his rivals here, so it will be disappointing if Home Of The Brave cannot justify his likely skinny odds as today's nap selection under Jim Crowley.

On what can be a fruitful afternoon for Palmer, his Frankie Dettori-ridden ESCOBAR can lift the Denford Stud Washington Singer Stakes.

This son of Famous Name made quite an impression on his debut, winning a decent Newbury maiden despite the fact that Palmer felt he was far from fully wound up for the race.

His is entered in the likes of the Champagne Stakes and Royal Lodge, as well as next year's Derby, so that perhaps provides a good illustration of the regard in which he is held. This Listed heat provides an excellent stepping stone to better things.

KINGS FETE struck Group Three gold at Goodwood and can follow up in the Betfred Geoffrey Freer Stakes with Pat Smullen on board.

An unplaced St Leger runner back in 2014, he has put in some sterling work for trainer Sir Michael Stoute this term, having missed a full season after suffering an injury in that Classic outing.

His initial effort in a Goodwood Listed heat in May reads well as the winner has since claimed a Group Three, while runner-up Educate landed the ultra-competitive John Smith's Cup at York last month.

Kings Fete then suffered terrible fortune at Royal Ascot when third in the Duke of Edinburgh – but that was all forgotten as he powered home in the Glorious Stakes last time.

A three-quarter-length winner over Ayrad that day, he had to really grind it out over 12 furlongs, so a marginal step back up in trip here is a definite positive for his already obvious chance.

Ripon enjoys its biggest day of the year and SNAP SHOTS, ridden by Richard Kingscote, can take the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Stakes back to the Cheshire yard of Tom Dascombe.

Snap Shots warmed up for this test with a course-and-distance success earlier in the month and that sighter should stand him in good stead.

Newmarket's Pantile Stud Grey Horse Handicap is always a sight to behold and CASE KEY can emerge victorious under Andrew Mullen this time.

As the name suggests, this race is restricted to grey horses and Michael Appleby's charge recently demonstrated his well-being with a Leicester win.
