REVOLUTIONIST is the pick in today's 57th John Smith's Cup at York following a fine third at Royal Ascot.

He did not enjoy the best of runs on his big day in Berkshire and it was to his credit that he stuck on for third having had to race wide.

The handicapper subsequently put him up 2lb for that run but he races off his old mark here and in this kind of competitive event, that marginal advantage can make all the difference. P J McDonald rides Mark Johnston's inmate.

QUEST FOR MORE has had his opportunities limited by the recent wet spell of weather but he can make up for lost time in the John Smith's Silver Cup Stakes.

Second to the sidelined Moonrise Landing on the Knavesmire in May, he remains a classy performer for Roger Charlton. Phillip Makin has the ride.

LIMATO drops back to six furlongs for the first time in over a year in the Darley July Cup but he can show he has lost none of his dash by landing the Group One showpiece at Newmarket.

Henry Candy's charge looked set to be a leading sprinter last term after winning each of his four outings over six furlongs as a juvenile before returning in 2015 with a bloodless success at Ascot in April.

He suffered a shock reverse when a short price at Haydock before bouncing back to chase home the brilliant Muhaarar in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Given that one's subsequent efforts, there was little shame in Limato being beaten just under four lengths – but Candy opted to avoid a rematch, instead preferring to step up to seven furlongs.

Limato handled the switch with aplomb when winning the Park Stakes at Doncaster last September and was, at the very least, unfortunate not to be closer when second in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Arc day.

Candy then threw another distance into the mix on Limato's debut this term, stretching him out to a mile in the Lockinge, and while it did not look as if he totally stayed when finishing fourth, Candy was far from convinced that was the case.

It would have been a mile again in the Queen Anne at Ascot but the ground intervened, as it did for plan B which was the Diamond Jubilee – won by stablemate Twilight Son, who also goes here.

Candy has been left with little alternative now at the top table other than to go back to six furlongs – but one thing we know is that he should come home as well as anything up the hill and there will be no excuses on the ground front this time.

Twilight Son is a big danger but even Candy has admitted he thinks there's little between them. Harry Bentley rides today's nap selection.

CUNCO had to settle for third at the Royal meeting but can bounce back to winning form in the bet365 Superlative Stakes under Robert Havlin.

His name will always be in the record books as the first son of Frankel to race and he certainly impressed when winning at Newbury in May.

Subsequently a far-from-disgraced third to Churchill in the Chesham, he looks sure to really begin to sparkle over a mile. But this seven furlongs should prove a bit more of a test than Ascot, which will be in his favour.

GROWL, ridden by Tony Hamilton, can make it a hat-trick as he steps up to seven furlongs for the first time in the bet365 Bunbury Cup.

KODI BEAR has yet to hit top gear this term but he can enjoy his moment in the sun as he dips in class to Group Two level in the Fred Cowley MBE Memorial Summer Mile at Ascot.

He has finished seventh in both the Lockinge and Queen Anne and, while not beaten far, he is probably just a shade short of genuine Group One level.

HOOFALONG sits on a career-high mark of 100 now but should not be ignored in the totescoop6 Heritage Handicap, while SOVEREIGN DEBT is another who must on the shortlist in Chester's CorbettSports City Plate.
