NORTH Yorkshire trainer Rebecca Menzies has a better reason than most to hope that Newcastle racecourse passes an 8am inspection and that racing this afternoon is granted the go-ahead.

Menzies is aiming to send Chavoy back to the Gosforth Park track where he won last month by five lengths.

The gelding has since finished a creditable runner-up at Ayr and is plainly in excellent form.

His target this afternoon is the Collingwood Insurance Handicap Chase.

With Tony Kelly in the saddle, Chavoy has winning claims on behalf of Menzies, who trains at Foulrice Farm, Brandsby, which will be forever associated with Gold Cup-winning trainer Peter Beaumont during the glory years of Jodami and a whole host of other top-notch staying chasers.

Henry Hogarth saddles Deny in the Gem Partnerships Handicap Hurdle, aiming to complete a quick double with a horse who started his life as a Flat performer under the care of no less a trainer than Sir Michael Stoute at Newmarket.

Deny won nicely on his latest start at Catterick and although the handicapper has hiked him up 8lb for that success, he promises to be competitive again with Adam Nicol once again taking the mount.

Notonebuttwo has proved a revelation this season, winning twice on this course before completing a hat-trick at Wetherby.

He turns out again for trainer Chris Grant in the KB Sheet Metal Handicap Hurdle with Diarmuid O’Regan maintaining his partnership with the gelding. A bold bid is anticipated.

Luccombe Down (2.55), a bumper winner for John Quinn at Hexham in October before going to the sales, makes his debut for Donald McCain and looks an interesting recruit to hurdles.

McCain has a further good chance on the card with Whatdoesthefoxsay (4.00), successful at Bangor and Worcester on her last two starts.

At Wolverhampton’s twilight meeting, David O’Meara aims to bring up a rapid hat-trick of wins with his new recruit Risk ‘N’ Reward in the Unibet Handicap over six furlongs.

The four-year-old has won both his races since joining the North Yorkshire trainer, comprising two wins at Southwell over six and seven furlongs, achieved in only three days just over a week ago.

Risk ‘N’ Reward has a 12lb penalty to carry this evening, but he is in such inspired form that it will take a brave man to say he will be unable to win again. Danny Tudhope has the mount.

O’Meara has an interesting runner in Clever Love in the Daily Price Boosts At Unibet Maiden Stakes.

The three-year-old has done most of his racing in France and looks capable of at least winning an average race or two.

He is not to be underestimated on his first outing for his Nawton handler.

Former Malton jockey Freddie Tylicki, who recently returned to action after suffering facial injuries in a nasty pile up on this course in November, has a good mount on Steve Rogers in the 32Red Handicap.

Trained by Roger Varian at Newmarket, Tylicki’s base for the last 18 months, Steve Rogers won well on this course three weeks ago. He has been raised 6lb for that success, which looks fair.

A horse who has raced only four times in his life and who is thus open to further improvement, the four-year-old is napped to score again.

Norton trainer Brian Ellison saddles Monsea in the coral.co.uk Handicap.

The four-year-old, previously trained by Richard Hannon and a dual-winner, finished third for Ellison on this course last month over an extended nine furlongs.

He is now set to tackle a mile-and-a-half for the first time, which looks an interesting move.

Give Us A Belle (5.15), who is a four-times winner at this venue, looks sure to go well under John Egan in the opening sprint after his spirited runner- up effort just over a fortnight ago.

Malton jockey Jason Hart teams up with another course specialist in Piccolo Express (7.45). Brian Baugh’s gelding is a triple winner over this course and distance and has run creditably on his latest starts.

Newcastle today: 1.50 Notonebuttwo, 2.20 Dingo Bay, 2.55 Luccombe Down, 3.25 Chavoy, 4.00 Whatdoesthefoxsay, 4.30 Deny.

(Inspection 8am) Wolverhampton today: 5.15 Give Us A Belle, 5.45 Risk ‘N’ Reward, 6.15 Clever Love, 6.45 Steve Rogers (NAP), 7.15 Monsea, 7.45 Piccolo Express.

Today’s other meetings: Bangor and Kempton.
