HOLDERS Strensall were within five minutes of exiting the York Minster Engineering Football League Junior Cup at the first hurdle before winning on penalties against Moor Lane.

Division four side Lane led 2-1 but Lee Lyon hit a late equaliser for Strensall, who then won the shoot-out 5-4. James Shaw hit both Moor Lane goals, while Mick Pipe got Strensall’s first.

Division four champions Sporting Knavesmire advanced into round two at the expense of division three side Civil Service, winning 4-0 with goals from Luke Hutchinson, Tom Wilson, Andy Simpson and Steve Barker.

Matty Cooper hit both Selby Olympia goals in a 2-1 home win over Huby, while Tadcaster Magnets defeated Thorpe 3-0 with strikes from Josh Tinker, John Crawley and Phil Smith.

Division two leaders Aviva were taken to penalties by division four side Bishop Wilton.

Tom Shirley’s goal for Aviva was cancelled out by Ben Stoker but Aviva won the shoot-out 8-7 with ’keeper Danny Cowpon scoring the winning spot kick. Osbaldwick beat Fulford 3-0 with goals by Chris Bilton (2) and Aaron Kirby.

White Horse beat Elvington Harriers 6-0, thanks to goals from John Marshall (2), Rory McCray (2) and Lee Streatham, plus an own goal. Luke Crowther scored the only goal of the game as Cliffe defeated F1 Racing 1-0.

They will meet Heslington in round two after goals from Rob Rushton and Olly Murray saw them beat Barmby Moor 2-1.

Melbourne were 4-1 winners over Selby Town with goals from Matthew Underwood, Renatash Prunulis (2) and Geddis Labanuskis.

Stamford Bridge booked a home tie with Ouseburn in round two after a 7-0 win at LNER Builders.

Paul Crangle and Nathan Spreckely both scored twice to add to goals from Kev Smith, Harry Bryant and Jamie Rank.
