Senior League Cup holders Dunnington were held to a 1-1 draw by York St John, writes Terry Todd.

Scott Sullivan’s goal was cancelled out by Alex Dixon for the students, but Dunnington goalkeeper Adam Thomas, who had earlier kept his side in the match, was the hero as Dunnington edged into the next round 5-4 on penalties.

The hope of a league and cup double for premier division champions Haxby United was shattered by Kartiers, who were leading 3-0 before the break. Though Neil Holmes pulled a goal back, the Selby side held on to win 3-1.

Another ’keeper to earn match-winning plaudits was Huntington’s Steve Mears, who denied Hamilton Panthers. However, Huntington still needed a last-minute header from Tom Shirley to salvage a draw and then win on penalties.

The two sides promoted from division one clashed at Easingwold, but it was the champions York RI who progressed after they won 7-4.

That set up a meeting with Post Office, who came from a goal down to defeat Bishopthorpe 6-3. Richard Walton and Rob Whitehead both scored twice for the Post Office. The big surprise in the Junior League Cup was the defeat of Selby RSSC, who lost 2-1 at Crayke.

The Selby side took the lead but two goals from James Moverley and an outstanding performance from ’keeper Toby Wells denied them. Paul Crangle hit a hat-trick for Heslington in a 7-3 win over F1 Racing, as did Mick Pipe in Strensall’s 6-3 win over Selby Olympia.

Scott Nicholas and Danny Peace both hit a brace in St Clement’s 7-0 win over Bishop Wilton.

York St John won the Reserve League Cup with a 3-2 win over Copmanthorpe. The students went 2-0 up Michael Wares and Josh Hind. Andrew Manns scored twice for Cop before Dan Hook won it.
