A LIMITED fixture schedule in the York Minster Engineering League premier division provided Wigginton Grasshoppers with an opportunity to move five points clear at the top - and they did just that with a 3-0 victory at York RI.

Several matches were postponed due to the league's representative team's FA Inter-League Cup tie against the Chester and Wirrall League on the same afternoon, but Wiggy, despite missing a few players, opted to go ahead with theirs.

They enjoyed the lion's share of the possession in the first half but it remained goalless, with RI having goalkeeper Paul Bailey to thank for keeping the home side firmly in the fixture.

However, just three minutes into the second half, the visitors took the lead as Eddy Clapham fired home after Gary Newton's effort was pushed out into his path.

Ten minutes later, the lead was doubled, Newton chipping the ball to the back post for Matthew Tiplady to head home from a tight angle.

Man-of-the-match Newton wrapped up the tie late on when his shot went in off a post to secure the points for Wigginton.

Poppleton United continued their recent revival with a 1-0 win over Malton & Norton, while Church Fenton suffered a third consecutive home defeat, losing 2-1 to Hemingbrough United.

James Barrett (2) and Paul Moran gave division one leaders Thorpe United a 3-0 victory over Riccall United, maintaining the table-toppers' six-point advantage at the summit.

Second-placed Kirkbymoorside collected a big three points with a 1-0 triumph at third-placed Pocklington Town.

Neil Richardson scored both of Harrison Signs' goals in a 2-1 home win over Tockwith, majestically rounding the opposition keeper to secure the points in the dying minutes of the game.

Rawcliffe led Wilberfoss 2-0 at half-time thanks to a 30-yard screamer from Niall Smallwood and a Paul Branscombe effort, but they had to settle for a point after a resurgent Foss came back to secure a 2-2 draw.

Alastair Irwin and Tom Rushworth scored for Easingwold Town either side of half-time to allow the hosts to register a 2-1 success over Brooklyn.

In division two, second-placed Strensall avenged their 8-4 mauling by Haxby Town last week as they defeated the title favourites 3-2 in their immediate rematch.

Alex Burton (2) and Gareth Hirst grabbed the goals as they narrowed the gap at the top to three points, though Haxby still have a game in hand.

Civil Service caused an upset at third-placed Bishopthorpe United, beating the home side 2-1 with goals from Andy Norman and Matty Fairclough.

Dan Marshall took his league goal haul to 14 for the season after hitting four in Heworth's 7-0 win rout of bottom club Huby United. John Moore (2) and Ross Wilkinson completed their scoring.

Liam Booth (2) and Dan Croft fired Barmby Moor to a 3-2 triumph over Heslington, for whom Alex Clark and Chris Asquith responded.

The gap between top and bottom in division three was made clear as table-toppers Rufforth United hammered 10-man Bramham 11-1.

Regular marksman Danny Cates led the scoring with a hat-trick, with Lee Dutton (2), Callum Patterson (2), Sean Stockdale, Adam Brooke, Brodie Doherty and Liam Keenaghan also on target. Kyle Macdonald hit the consolation.

Malt Shovel continued their unbeaten record with a 7-0 demolition of Selby Olympia, while Matthew Ward (3) and Jamie Forrest netted in Cawood's 4-0 success at The Raj.

Stillington Sports & Social Club returned to the top of division four following a 5-1 victory over Wheldrake. Brandon Carrick, Luke Conkleton, Paul Holmes, Gary Goodwin and Michael Kay inflicted the damage, Ben Bailey replying.

Previous leaders Clifford were held at home by Pollington thanks to Joe Lock's goal in a 1-1 draw.

Nathan Wright (2), Dane Winn and Amos Laverack struck in Elm Park's 4-0 win over Huntington. Gary Hardcastle and Chris Iveson bagged braces as LNER Builders pipped Swinton 4-3.
