THE York Minster Engineering League representative team came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over the Humberside Premier League Select in their latest outing.

After a tentative start, the first chance came via a free-kick when Matty Pallister’s close-range header was tipped over the bar by Humberside goalkeeper Ben Rawlings.

From the resulting corner, Chris Bilton shot narrowly wide from the edge of the box.

The Humber team began to favour the long ball and three in quick succession almost caught out the York defence

Pallister was alert to block a cross from full-back Ryan Holmes and, as Humber continued to test York’s defensive qualities, a good left-wing cross by Mathew Littlefield was cleared as far as Mark Ramussen, whose shot was blocked by Sam Lingard.

Scot Nicholas, Daniel Pedros and Chris Bilton began to influence the game and the York trio created an opportunity for Cam Sanderson, whose shot beat the goalkeeper but was cleared by Ramussen.

Marcus Godsell nearly broke the deadlock but was brilliantly tackled by Josh Luckup.

Instead, Humber took the lead when Craig Muirhead scored from a 30-yard free-kick.

Pallister equalised for York with a header in the 47th minute.

The York players were alternating positions under instruction from managers Andy Barkway and Gary Kitson.

York took the lead after a free-kick was awarded against the Humber goalkeeper for picking up a back pass. A tap from Pedros found Jake Moyes, who shot low into the corner.

After 75 minutes, the impressive Nicholas put Bilton away but his initial effort was parried by goalkeeper Rawlings. Bilton seized on the loose ball and chipped it into the far corner with Rawlings stranded.

Humber reacted to this setback and O’Connor forced York goalkeeper Clancy into a save at his near post.

Bilton then put the hard-working Godsell through on goal but his attempted lob was saved.

York gave debuts to Nicholas, Godsell, John Hedley and Jordan Annette. All made excellent contributions, with Nicholas just pipped to the man-of-the-match award by Daniel Pedros.

The Humberside man of the match was Ramussen, of Pocklington.

York are next on duty against the Yorkshire Amateur League in the Ernie Fairclough Challenge Trophy on Tuesday, December 6, at Pocklington.
