MANCHESTER United goalkeeping legend Alex Stepney is coming to York.

The former Old Trafford shot-stopper will host An Evening With Alex Stepney at Pike Hills Golf Club off the A64 near York on Friday, October 7.

Stepney played more than 500 times for Manchester United in the 1960s and 1970s, starring in the side that lifted the European Cup in 1968.

Martin Robinson, Pike Hills' house chairman, said: "We are delighted to welcome someone of Alex Stepney's footballing stature to the club and we are looking forward to being entertained by him on October 7."

Stepney, who was born in Surrey in 1942, made his league debut at Millwall in 1963 before moving to Chelsea in June 1966.

Three months later he was signed by Sir Matt Busby for £55,000 - then a world record fee for a goalkeeper.

He went on to help Manchester United win the 1967 League Championship, the 1968 European Cup and the 1977 FA Cup, and was part of the England squad for the 1970 World Cup.

In total he made 539 appearances for the club, kept 175 clean sheets and even scored two penalties in 1973 making him the club's top-scoring goalkeeper to this day.

In 1978, Stepney left United to play for Dallas Tornado before retiring as a player in 1980.

Since then he has coached at Southampton, Exeter City and Manchester City.

Tickets for the event cost £27.50, to include a three course dinner, followed by coffee and mints. The dress code for the evening, which is 7pm for a 7.30pm start, is lounge suit or black tie.
