THE highlight of the second round ties in the Fastpack York Sunday Morning League Cup was a hard-fought battle between holders Wigginton Grasshoppers and Malt Shovel.

Wiggy looked to be cruising at half-time as some neat play saw them establish a 3-0 lead through a Michael Clancy double and an earlier goal from Steve Jarvis.

Gary Lumley headed a rejuvenated Malt Shovel back into the game straight from the restart, and two minutes later Chris Coxon rifled a shot across the Wiggy keeper to make it 3-2 and seize control of the game.

A brief moment of respite for ‘Hoppers saw the ball cleared as far as Josh Luckhurst, who chipped over the the Selby defence and into the empty net.

Mike Cussans scored via a looping header to make it 4-3, only to see Jamie Willstrop restore the home side’s two-goal lead.

Further goals from Darren Moore and Coxon came either side of Willstrop’s second, but despite a dominant 45 minutes from the visitors, it was to be the holders who progressed to round three, 6-5.

Another close game took place at York Medics, where it took penalties to separate the sides.

Matthew Fortnam, Jaseren Grewal and Daniel McNorton bagged for Medics but Marcia Bishopthorpe matched their feat before eventually succumbing to the home side 8-7 on spot kicks.

York Nomads made light work of Wentworth, scoring an 11-2 success. Sam Thompson (4), Sam Shipley, Danny Snaith (2) and Andrew Simpson (2) bagged the goals for the home side with Diego Perdisci hitting a brace for the visitors.

Danny Cotton opened his NUR for the season to add to a Gary Stephenson blockbuster, but it still wasn’t enough to prevent a rampant Bubwith White Swan side from advancing to the next round.

Jason Crisp (2), Cohen Vause, Jamie Sedman, Ryan Whitlam and Ben Olsson netted for Swans in a 6-2 win.

Tom Lazenby (2), Matthew Howden and Ben Scholey were on target for Selby Olympia as they beat local rivals Thorpe Utd 4-2. Dalian Jones and Reece Stronach replied.

Three first round ties were also awaiting completion. Haxby United led Bramham 3-0 at half time, and that proved the difference with a goal packed second half resulting in a 7-4 final score.

Will Plews, Richard Wishart and Billy Lindsell grabbed two goals apiece for the home side with Mike Fell completing the scoring.

Brayton won 4-0 away at Cliffe. Will Cleary put away a Patrick Guest cross after 27 minutes and Joe Krygsman added the second from range second minutes later.

The second half saw Cliffe up the pressure, but the away side stood firm and increased their lead when a Cliffe defender turned a corner into his own net. Rob Guest added the fourth late on. Elmpark defeated Beeswing 7-1 in the remaining tie.
