SELBY Town's aim of finishing in the top-ten of Toolstation Northern Counties East League division one could be realised tomorrow when they play their final match of the season at home to Hall Road Rangers.

It will be the culmination of a rollercoaster season for the club which has seen the squad playing their final nine games in 21 days, including a 3-0 midweek defeat at nearest rivals Westella.

Interim manager Nigel Emery believes the intense programme is taking its toll.

He said: "We have had some tough seasons at Selby in the 20 years I have been involved, but I have never known it so bad – the players are absolutely shattered and almost running on empty."

If Town can sign off with a win and results go their way, they could even sneak into ninth spot. Wherever they finish, Selby can look back on some significant changes in recent months.

"The crowds have gone up from an average of 70 to over 100," added a pleased Emery.

"People are responding, there is a buzz about the place because they see local people and players they can relate to.

"The town's businesses are also getting behind us. The local chip shop, Mitchells, thought the managers looked scruffy and came up with new track-suits for us, while Yorkshire Window Designs stepped in to give the team warm-up gear.

"They are responding in a really positive way, which is great for the future."

The current managerial team have yet to be confirmed for next season, but they have been asked to organise a programme of pre-season fixtures and scout possible new signings.

Selby have organised a presentation evening on May 7 at Selby Trades Hall Working Men's Club. The evening will be hosted by a professional comedy compare and tickets cost £12.50 ticket price. They can be bought from behind the bar at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium or by calling Tommy on 07830218657.
