THE York Sunday Morning League Cup final proved to be a game of two halves as Wigginton Grasshoppers and Dunnington squared up at Huntington.

The first half was dominated by Dunnington, who came out of the blocks and created several chances early on with Wigginton struggling to keep pace. Indeed, the Black and Whites were rewarded for their efforts after 28 minutes, when a cross found Samson Wildwood who chested the ball down superbly before smashing his shot beyond Mackenzie Nichol and into the roof of the Wigginton net.

Dunnington created several further chances, only to be denied by the Wigginton back line, martialled fantastically by Jordan Holt.

The second half was much the opposite with the early introduction of substitutes Jamie Willstrop and Jamie Green giving Grasshoppers renewed hope.

It didn’t take Willstrop long to make an impact, heading home Tom Nicholson’s swirling cross from close range to level the tie.

With half an hour remaining, it was Willstrop again who broke through the Dunnington back line, beating two men before firing a ball across for Matthew Tiplady to slot home from three yards.

Despite efforts to get back into the game, Dunnington couldn’t break through and it was to be Wigginton who scored the fourth goal.

Josh Luckhurst played in Willstrop, who found the far corner of the net with a low strike to make it 3-1 and secure League Cup success for Grasshoppers for the second year running.

In division one, Hounds underlined their title credentials with an impressive 11-2 defeat of York Nomads. Red hot strikers Chris Jackson (5) and Gary Collier (3) amassed eight goals between them, with Nathan Perks also joining them in the hat-trick club.

Hambleton made a great start in their match with Quakerwood, assembling a three-goal lead within the first half-hour of the match.

Dale Holding then netted from close range to make it 3-1 before Tommy Medd added a second for Quakerwood, finishing a well worked move with a strike into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

After the break, Quakerwood continued in the ascendency, Alex Day rounding the keeper to equalise before Medd completed his hat-trick and the scoring to finish off an impressive comeback and a give his side a 5-3 victory.

In division two, a headed late consolation for Brayton from Lewis Chappell was nowhere near enough as the league leaders crashed 5-1 at Marcia Bishopthorpe.

Third-placed Thorpe United moved to within three points of Brayton with a 4-2 win over Beeswing. Jake Wild put them ahead at the interval before James Newnham doubled the lead from the penalty spot after the restart.

Wild then added a third to make it 3-0 before a brief comeback from Beeswing saw Craig Atkin net twice to make it 3-2. However, a second penalty from Newnham made it 4-2 and confirmed the points went Thorpe’s way.
