YORK Schoolboys Under-14s gave an encouraging display at Barnsley - despite their 2-0 defeat.

Their commitment and attitude came in for praise in a match played in exceptionally windy conditions.

York began well with the elements behind them, with Lucas Wilson and Ben Barker Spencer winning the midfield battle.

Good work by Tom Fleet on the left set up a half-chance for Joe Crosby whose shot went narrowly wide.

Barnsley, though, also created problems and forced good saves from Patrick Randall.

With the wind getting stronger, York continued to press but half-chances for Charlie Buckle, Dan Stevenson, Manni De Nobriga and Crosby were dealt with by the keeper.

York faced a difficult second half against the wind but the defensive quartet of Josh Tingle, Will Anderson, Miles Buckle and Charlie Buckle stood firm against early pressure.

York created the first chance as Wilson and Crosby set up Manni De Nobriga, but his shot just missed.

From the resulting goal kick, Barnsley broke through and took the lead.

They then got on top against tiring visitors and forced a string of excellent saves from Randall before sealing victory late on.

York rallied and a good cross from Tom Fleet found Ben Barker Spencer but his back-post header was collected by the keeper.

Then Crosby had a shot brilliantly saved.

YORK Schoolboys U13s lost 3-0 at home to Barnsley.

York dominated early possession, looking comfortable on the ball, but they nearly went behind when the visitors countered after clearing a corner, the goal being disallowed for a foul on keeper Joseph Hodge as he dived at the feet of the attacker.

York continued to press with great midfield work from Leo Potts, Alex Kemp, man-of-the-match Elliot Oliver and Liam White, the former creating the first shot on target for York.

Midway through the first half, though, a clearance caught out the back line and the visitors went one up against the run of play.

York continued to play good football but chances were at a premium against a packed defence, Conner Teale, Harvey Stephenson and Luke Jones having shots without testing the keeper.

Another long ball behind York's defence saw Barnsley go 2-0 up.

Barnsley started the second half with the wind and immediately put pressure on.

York’s back three of Leo Jones, Jacob Caringella and Ben Calam defended admirably, but when they struggled to clear a long goal kick, Barnsley made it 3-0.

YORK Schoolboys Under-12s were unlucky to see their unbeaten record end when they fell to an undeserved 2-1 defeat to Barnsley.

The Minster boys began strongly with the wind behind them, Will Hollings and Harry Tinker having decent efforts while nice passing movements and quick interplays suggested the winning form would continue.

However, a quick Barnsley throw caught York unawares and the visitors profited with the opener.

It was the first time this season York had gone behind.

They remained on the front foot, Lewis Humphreys and Elliot Heath creating chances, but, with the keeper on fine form, they couldn't profit.

Playing against the wind, York fought on, countering the elements by keeping the ball on the floor, with Dan Tingle running the game from midfield.

They equalised when Tinker helped set up Humphreys. His shot was parried, Taylor Bell putting the rebound away.

However, from a long ball, York failed to clear and Barnsley retook the lead against the run of play, thereafter seeing the game out.

Bell went to hospital for stiches in a cut that could keep him out for weeks.

YORK Schoolboy U11s came from behind twice to beat Barnsley 3-2 thanks to a late Tom Algar strike.

High winds made life hard, Barnsley adapting quicker and taking the lead.

York were restricted to long-range efforts from Max Ezard before a long pass from Oliver Darley bisected the defence and Kaiden Butler lobbed the outstanding keeper.

York started to threaten with good approach play from Mathew Dawes and Ellis Cattaneo but again Barnsley caught them napping to retake the lead.

Another fine goal from Butler - a close-range overhead kick - levelled matters.

As both teams sought a winner, fine goalkeeping from Noah Ellis kept the scores level, and, with two minutes left, Algar picked up a loose pass outside the area and thumped home from 20 yards.
