YORK'S Under-11 Schoolboy footballers caused a major shock when they won the Yorkshire seven-a-side championship in Leeds.

In wet and windy conditions, the Minster youngsters stunned Leeds in their opening game at St Theresa's School with a 2-1 victory before producing their finest display of the competition when coming back from 2-0 down at half-time against Sheffield. Harrison Cain's second half hat-trick gave them a 3-2 win.

Full of confidence, they swept past Huddersfield 5-1 before notching up a fourth straight win with a 2-0 victory over Barnsley.

They played Scarborough in their final match knowing a win would crown them champions for the first time since 2008 and would see them represent the county at the North of England finals at the Sunderland Academy next March.

They produced a comfortable 5-1 victory.

York’s squad of ten players - Noah Ellis, Cole Gayles, Owen Dunckley, Mathew Dawes, Will Hotson, Kaiden Butler, Mathew Barber, Harrison Cain, Max Ezzard and Ellis Cattaneo scored an impressive 17 goals in the five wins.

York U13s demolished Wakefield 7-1 in West Yorkshire.

They went in front in the 12th minute after Luke Jones drove into the box and zipped a pass to Alex Kemp to dispatch into the net. He got the second five minutes later when smashing home from another Jones pull back and Alfie Evans put York 3-0 on 21 minutes with a sweetly hit shot on the turn.

They took their foot off the gas at this point and Wakefield's determination paid dividends in the 29th minute when they made the score 3-1. Joseph Hodge, in the York goal, then pulled off a series of good saves before the break.

York re-asserted on the restart and went 4-1 up in the first five minutes when Jones finished after some quick midfield passing involving Elliot Oliver, Leo Potts and Olly Hanley. They scored again from the kick-off as Liam White jinked round two Wakefield players and hit a 25-yard rocket that was pushed onto the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

Evans claimed a brace in the 66th minute with a great strike before White, after a neat 1-2 with Jones, hit a 20-yard shot that the Wakefield keeper could only watch hit the back of the net for York's seventh.

York U12s got off to a good start as they beat Nottingham 4-1 in their opening league fixture.

They led following an even first ten minutes as Lewis Humphreys tapped in from one yard after a great run from Harry Tinker and a cross from Elliot Heath.

York’s second came from some lovely one-touch football that put Heath clear down the right. He turned the last defender inside out and again put a pass across the goal for Humphreys to score from even closer range than his first.

Nottingham scored on 40 minutes and York were fighting to keep their lead but George Turbine put away a spot kick after the visitors handled in the box and, with five minutes to go, Isaac Meehan slotted away a low drive from inside the box.
