PAUL MARSHALL is looking for his Pickering Town team to build on a performance he described as one of the "best ever" he had experienced as a manager.

The Pikes go to Parkgate in the Northern Counties East League premier division tomorrow on the back of a stunning midweek home display against Retford United where they fashioned a 2-2 draw despite playing the majority of the game with nine men.

New signing, and former manager, Tony Hackworth was given his marching orders after five minutes and assistant boss Denny Ingram joined him in taking an early bath with only a quarter of an hour on the clock.

But Pickering showed tremendous courage, and twice took the lead through George Bissett and Ryan Cooper, before being pegged back. It was a gritty display that thrilled Marshall and, following on from their first league win of the campaign at Athersley Recreation, has everyone in high hopes ahead of the trip to Parkgate tomorrow.

"It was good to get our first away win and then good to get four points in a week in exceptional circumstances," said the Recreation Ground chief. "Tony Hackworth got sent off after five minutes and Denny Ingram after 16 (against Retford). It was 0-0, two of our most experienced players were out and we had to play 75 minutes with nine men.

"It was probably one of the best ever performances (for me) as a manager. We played another seven minutes of injury time in the first half and five at the end. It (result) was just what we needed. After losing 3-0 to Cleethorpes when we played extremely well and got nothing for it.

"The crowd really saw the commitment and the effort and it was amazing. I was drained at the end of it. I was so proud of everyone that stayed on the field and it was just a great night. At the end, the lads came off saying they couldn't believe we hadn't won.

"That showed me what they can do."

Marshall will look to bring in another player over the next few days, not least with striker Calum Ward expected to miss up to six weeks after he punctured a lung in the defeat against Cleethorpes. It was a serious injury that hospitalised the former Tadcaster Albion forward.

He added: "We are going to need to get someone else in for more cover. Denny and Tony will be suspended for three games each and I will put a couple of seven days in. It's a big month ahead of us going into October where we will have two games a week.

"Calum has punctured a lung and cracked his rib. He was in hospital and had to have an operation. He was at the game at the weekend and is feeling a lot better. They (doctors) have said it will be six weeks but he thinks it will be four. We will be taking it easy with him."

Selby Town boss Dave Ricardo is looking for his team to take their chances when Glasshoughton Welfare come to Flaxley Road in NCEL division one.

The Robins have struggled since a 12-0 win over Askern in the FA Vase - a point against Penistone Church in midweek the only thing they have to show from their last three games.

Ricardo said: "Results over the past couple of weeks have not been as positive as we would like. The performances haven't been too bad but individual errors are costing us dearly and we are not scoring at the other end.

"Glasshoughton gives us an opportunity to get three points. These are games we should be looking to win."

Elsewhere, Knaresborough Town go to Grimsby Borough. In Evo-Stik League first division north, Harrogate Railway go to Burscough and Scarborough Athletic host Warrington Town.
