NEWLY promoted Britannia Tadcaster made light work of Hounds as the York Sunday Morning League got under way with a couple of surprise results in division one.

Britannia were 6-1 winners, Jamie Glover (2), Chris Simpson, Josh Tinker and Adam Field all finding the net for Tadcaster. A Hounds own goal completed their tally.

Dave Bramley hit the Selby side’s consolation.

Last year’s division two champions Quakerwood also met an unexpected defeat at the hands of Malt Shovel.

Luke Durham sent Malt Shovel into an early lead but a neat finish from Dale Holding levelled the scores. Carl Stewart then hit a 20-yard curling strike around the onrushing goalkeeper to give Quakerwood a 2-1 advantage at the interval.

Theo Cieply saved a Stewart penalty before Josh Brigham turned provider in the last ten minutes, his passes setting up Mike Cussans and Chris Harkin whose strikes earned Malt Shovel a 3-2 success.

Reigning champions Wigginton Grasshoppers enjoyed a 5-2 win at Bubwith Swans.

Josh Luckhurst fired home from 20 yards to put ‘Hoppers ahead after half an hour and then slotted in a second three minutes later. Jason Carlill pulled one back for the home side before the break but Luckhurst completed his hat-trick four minutes after the restart. Jamie Willstrop scored Wiggy’s fourth before Carlill struck again to make it 4-2. Substitute Jack Green added a fifth with five minutes remaining.

Jimmy Willmoth gave Dunnington the lead at home to Hambleton, but Rob Harris restored parity before half-time. The home side gained the better of a well-contested game, Samson Wildwood’s late goal giving Dunnington a 2-1 triumph.

In division two, York Phoenix took the lead at Cliffe thanks to a Scott Higgs left footed finish which was quickly followed by a Tom Norton headed goal as they moved into a 2-0 half-time lead.

Ben Low increased the gap to 3-0 after the break with a low shot before Cliffe got a goal back through Nathan Leach and started to put Phoenix under pressure.

Danny Phillips, though, wrapped up the points by chipping the keeper and helping Phoenix to a 4-1 success against last season's division three champions, who dropped their first home points since forming last season.

Selby Olympia recorded a bloodless 6-0 success at NUR.

Chris Coxon helped himself to a hat-trick with Matt Howden, Jan Takacs and David Hullah also getting onto the score sheet.

Dan Jones struck to give Thorpe United a 1-0 advantage at Marcia Bishopthorpe but the home side equalised before the break. Kyle Hesling then put Shaun Gandy through on goal and he made no mistake, restoring Thorpe’s lead. James Wye put the tie beyond doubt before a late Marcia goal made it 3-2.

A hat-trick from Chris Johnson was the highlight of Haxby’s 5-2 victory over York Medics. Will Plews and Matt Boggan were also on target for the home side with Lewis Warnock and Jake Patel finding the net for Medics.

York Wanderers could not make the most of their early pressure at Brayton and Will Cleavy bagged two goals in 15 minutes to make them pay for their errors, adding a third for his first ever hat-trick just before the end of the first half.

Despite chances at both ends in the second period, the magnificent form of both goalkeepers meant Brayton gained a 3-0 win.

Adam James and Samir Abdoulaye combined to give Wentworth a 2-1 half time lead at Knapton, despite a glancing header from Callum Watson for the home side.

Watson added a second identical goal to even things up before Chris Cooper struck from 35 yards after the Wentworth keeper was caught out of his goal. Joe Crabtree pulled it back to 3-3 and Dom Green struck a late winner in the dying seconds as Wentworth left with the points.
