UNBEATEN York Sunday Football Morning League first division leaders Wigginton Grasshoppers initially had to work hard to preserve their record against Bubwith White Swan.

Bubwith led 2-1 at half-time, a lead that could have been much wider. On target were Leon Wood and Graham Stewart from a penalty with Grasshoppers’ lone reply a spot-kick from Michael Clancy.

Grasshoppers finally asserted themselves in the second half, in which they drilled in six unanswered goals.

Neale Holmes levelled before the haul was swelled by Clancy, Jamie Willstrop, Jack Thompson and substitutes Jamie Green and Tom Coates.

The best was saved until last when Jordan Holt, now outfield after an initial stint in goal, raced on to Willstrop’s back-heel to flick the ball up and volley home for the rampant green and whites.

Cliffe maintained their gallop at the top of division three after a 2-1 derby win over Thorpe United.

Luke Durham opened the scoring for the leaders with a penalty before adding a second goal when he tapped home the rebound after a speculative effort had cannoned back off the crossbar.

James Wye scrambled a second-half reply for Thorpe but Cliffe held out.

There was a shock in the Senior Challenge Trophy quarter-finals, where top-tier Dunnington were ousted in extra time by division two leaders York Nomads.

Visiting Dunnington led 2-0 after 20 minutes through strikes by Sam Wildwood and Jimmy Willmoth.

Nomads’ Sam Thompson provided a lifeline on the half-hour only for Josh Tattersall to restore Dunnington’s two-goal cushion before the break.

The hosts got back to parity with a brace of Chris Dyson goals to take the tie into added time, where a long-range effort from Chris Bilton sealed Nomads’ win.

In the other quarter-final, Marcia Grey countered from a 2-0 deficit to Haxby United to win 6-2 through Tommy Medd (3), Leigh Dutton (2) and Sam Lingard.

l New teams are welcome to make applications to the York Sunday Morning League and the York Minster Engineering (Saturday) League for season 2015/16.
