WIGGINTON Grasshoppers got their premier division title bid back on track with an 8-0 win over Hamilton Panthers in the York Minster Engineering Football League.

Second-placed Wiggy, hammered 8-0 by Old Malton St Mary’s the previous weekend, led basement side Panthers 2-0 at the interval with goals from Dan Zambelli and Eddie Clapham.

Wigginton moved to within two points of leaders Dunnington as Clapham completed his hat-trick, Scott Stewart hit three in 20 minutes and Luke Roberts rounded off the scoring after a 40-yard run. Defending champions Old Malton continued their rich vein of form as they beat Huntington Rovers 4-1.

The goals were shared between Jon Newton, scoring for the third successive game, and Tom Fenwick, with Dave Hartas replying for Huntington.

Poppleton recorded their first home win in 11 games to move out of the relegation zone.

They trailed Riccall United 3-1 at the interval but hit back for a 4-3 success. Riccall’s scorers were Wayne Brook, Dave Heron and Ryan Watson.

Joe Dale scored for Poppleton in the first half and doubled his tally after the break before Matt Janes equalised and Adam Ferguson hit the winner.

York St John eased their relegation worries at the expense of fellow strugglers Easingwold Town as Michael Grogan hit the only goal of the game in the final five minutes.

Copmanthorpe mustered their biggest winning margin for nine years as they trounced York RI 7-1.

The Cop tally was shared between Robin Bedford (2), Chris Storey, Mark Featherstone, Danny Leach, Mike Peace and Olly Bird.

Mark Woodward netted for RI. The top two sides in division one both won away from home.

Leaders Aviva needed a quality goal from James Calary to secure a 1-0 triumph at bottom of the table Wilberfoss.

Second-placed Malton & Norton came from a goal down at Pocklington to win 2-1.

Marcus Godsell’s 12th goal of the season cancelled out Tom Raey’s opener for Pock, with Kingsley Daffern hitting the winner to extend the Ryedale side’s unbeaten away run to 13 games.

White Horse, who have games in hand on all the promotion-chasing sides, stretched their unbeaten home run to 14 games with a 5-2 win over lowly Haxby.

Darren Storey put Haxby in front before Lenny Mason levelled and the hosts went in front with a Jonathon Marshall penalty.

Haxby restored parity before the break through Dale Waddington, but a John Langrick hat-trick after the interval settled the game.

St Clement’s ended a barren run of almost five hours without a goal as they beat Hemingbrough 2-0.

Simon Kehoe and Scott Nicholas scored for Saints.
