HOLDERS Hemingbrough will travel to Bishopthorpe for a tasty HPH Cup second round tie after an easy 107-run win over Ovington.

Matty Clark was the star of the first-round show with an unbeaten 116 and 2-13 as Hemingbrough's 253-6, which also included 56 from James Dougherty, was well beyond Ovington's scope.

Second division Copmanthorpe took the scalp of top-flight side York thanks to a great spell of bowling by in-form Chris Hall.

He grabbed 5-18 in his ten-over spell which included two maidens to follow last week's six-wicket haul against Kelfield in the league.

Sixteen-year-old Tom Eckhart's 80 took Bishopthorpe to a six-wicket win against Burn, who slumped from 100-1 to 100-5 in a three-over spell before recovering to finish on 181-8.

Second division leaders University Staff beat under-strength first division side North Duffield.

Lee Wild (92) and David Bielby (67no) put on 143 as the villagers posted an imposing 204-5. Staff made a blazing start to their reply as Mumtaz Hussain raced to his 71 in 50 balls, clubbing seven sixes. That enabled Muhammad Suleman (61no), who earlier took 4-36, to steer them home with four balls to spare.

Clifton Alliance sneaked a one-run win against Wheldrake by defending their 206-7 after Martin Lambert (74) and Les Fearn (69) put Wheldrake in with a big chance. Wheldrake needed five off the final over but Clifton bowler David Friend maintained his cool.

Askham Bryan YPO were tottering on 17-5 as Arran Reid (4-14) and Mike Hamshere (3-12) ripped out the top order. They managed to total 82, but British Sugar strolled home by eight wickets.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Scott Sim struck 78 to take Drax to victory over Heworth with 2.3 overs to spare.

Slow bowler Mike Richardson turned the Scothern Construction Cup first round tie in Kelfield's favour as he put the skids under Hemingbrough II.

Kelfield's 202-7 looked under threat as Hemingbrough eased to 83-2 but Richardson's introduction altered the direction of the game.

Stockton & Hopgrove will host Kelfield in the second round after comfortably disposing of Acomb's young side. Stockton made 195-8 before bowling out Acomb out for 93 with Rich Grimes taking 5-21.

Craig Hewson's 74 was in vain for North Cave as they were edged out by one run by Hirst Courtney. It was a similar story for Toby Meegan, who made 93 for Malton & Old Malton II only for Melbourne's greater strength in depth to pay off with half centuries from Malcolm Harrison, Will Nicholson and Matt Beavers.

Nadeem Shefta's 85 took Selby II to victory against neighbours Thorpe Willoughby II, whose Bruno Hullah scored 84.

Burn II's Jamie Bingle hit the highest score in the Premier Sports Cup at the weekend with his 79 guiding his side to an easy 120-run win against Pocklington.

Bishopthorpe II defended 119 by bowling out Carlton Towers for 93 with John Latimer taking 4-21 and Mark Pilmoor 3-20.

Veterans Tony Kerrison (50) and Nigel Collinson (36no) steered Stockton & Hopgrove II to an eight-wicket win against Ovington whose best batsmen - Peter Smith (54) and Joe Whale (42) - were both run out.

Jamie Stevenson was Hirst Courtney's match-winner against North Cave. He bowled the penultimate over with Cave needing eight to win and grabbed a couple of wickets to see his side edge it by one run.

Performance of the week

CENTURIES are not particularly common in HPH Vale Cricket League cup matches, so Matty Clark's unbeaten 116 against Ovington - and a couple of cheap wickets - earn him this week's award.
