YORK-BASED Ebor GT/Howgarth racing chalked up a win in round eight of the GT Cup at Rockingham Speedway in Northamptonshire.

Starting third on the grid, Marcus Howgarth, in a Ferrari 458, took the option of staying high on the Indy style track to go around the outside of turn one.

That paid immediate dividends as they took the lead in class despite some contact between the other contenders which meant a slight loss of traction.

The rain then arrived, causing tricky driving conditions. With all cars on the slick tyres, Howgarth managed to open up an eight-second gap on the rest of the field to bring his Ferrari home for the race win.

Howgarth said: “When the rain comes down, if you’ve never driven on brand new slick tyres in the wet, it can only be described as driving on glass with your steering wheel disconnected from your car.

“The Rockingham weekend was our best yet and it feels like the momentum is finally with us as we approach the half way stage of the season.

“Rockingham is an awesome place, built on the relics of the British steel industry and comprising a seven degree banked oval surrounded with a 5ft concrete wall and catch fence.

“It’s a test for the drivers and a test of your nerve when you’re inches away from the banking wall at 140mph.”

The team are second in the standings.
