A SELBY cricketer has just finished his 60th season in local cricket.
Lawrence “Loggy” Stones, who first turned out for Hirst Courtney Cricket Club as an eight-year-old, is still keeping wicket for the first team in the York Vale League.
He captained the team for 25 years until 30 years ago.
His first venture in the line-up was in friendly games but he later played in the first division of the Yorkshire Council and also in the vaunted West Riding League.
“I learned a lot of my cricket while attending Drax Grammar School,” said Stones, who farms in the village.
His biggest knocks have been 175, which was racked up in a friendly – and 110, posted in a league fixture.
And local cricket is truly a family affair with his son Russell playing alongside him in the team.
His eight-year-old son Kieran is coming up through the junior squad, while Stones’ wife Pauline makes the teas.
