THE JP Plant Yorkshire League Knockout Cup, a competition for clubs from the newly formed North and South Yorkshire Premier Leagues, got underway with a regionalised preliminary round on Monday.

There were a number of outstanding individual performances as, despite the rain all the ties involving clubs from the Hunters ECB Yorkshire Premier League North reached a positive conclusion.

Woodhouse Grange showed their cup pedigree by beating Acomb thanks largely to an unbroken stand of 116 between Chris Bilton (90 not out) and Mike Burdett (52no).

Visiting Skipper Andy Tute top scored with 62 but only two other batsmen reached double figure in a total of 185 all out, Josh Jackson picking up 3-34.

Chasing a revised target, the hosts lost a wicket in the opening over but from that point on were always in control.

Castleford beat visitors Dunnington in the day’s tightest finish, winning by nine runs.

James Sykes (69no) and David Wainwright (77) shared a third-wicket partnership of 148 as the hosts reached 183-4, and although Harwood Williams (53) replied with a half-century some miserly bowling, not least by Eddie Morrision, who finished with figures of 3-13 from seven overs, meant the home side triumphed.

An unbeaten 116 by Jack Storey was not enough for Hull as they lost by five wickets to visitors Sheriff Hutton Bridge.

Storey and James Philips put on 118 for the second wicket as the hosts scored at more than eight runs an over to reach 183-3, but the reply from the visitors was even more impressive - Yorkshire’s Karl Carver finishing unbeaten on 72 as victory was achieved with three overs to spare.

Another of Headingley’s young guns also turned in a match-winning display for their club, Will Rhodes top-scoring with 61 to set up a comfortable victory for his Stamford Bridge side over Scarborough.

The visitors were making steady progress thanks to Darren Harland (40) and skipper Ben Elvidge (36) until five wickets from Donovan Sinclair (5-44) helped reduce them from 106-3 to 139 all out.

It never looked likely to be enough, and so it proved as the hosts sealed a place in the first round with five overs to spare.

Selected first round ties to be played Monday, May 31: Castleford v Yorkshire Academy, Sheriff Hutton Bridge v Wickersley Old Village or Treeton, Stamford Bridge v Appleby Frodingham, Aston Hall v Driffield Town, Woodhouse Grange v York, Doncaster Town or Sheffield Collegiate v Harrogate.
