YORK not only defeated local rivals Dunnington in a one-sided contest on the opening day of the newly-formed Hunters ECB Yorkshire Premier League North – but also beat the weather.

The match was dominated by two returning Clifton Park favourites as Duncan Snell hit 78 and Dan Woods took 5-18 as the visitors were bowled out for 90 inside 24 overs.

A saturated outfield and further showers meant play did not get underway until 3.45pm, with the contest reduced to 24 overs per side.

Woods, returning for his second spell in charge at Shipton Road, won the toss and chose to bat.

Snell – opening with Joe Ashdown, signed over the winter from neighbours Clifton Alliance – made his intentions clear from the off, striking former York seamer Jake Murphy for two boundaries in the opening over.

The bowler bounced back by taking the wicket of Ashdown in his next over, however, the debutant being caught behind by keeper Dan Barrett for seven.

A partnership of 125 in 16 overs between Snell and Liam McKendry put the home side in the ascendancy, with the pair scoring at will against an attack struggling to cope with the damp conditions.

McKendry departed one short of a half-century, Collis King taking the catch at short midwicket off the bowling of Dave Brent, and was replaced by younger brother Ryan.

He wasted no time getting into his stride, going on to finish unbeaten on 35 from just 17 deliveries.

Snell was finally dismissed in the penultimate over, when he lost his footing and Tom Loten affected a straight-forward run out, but his 75-ball innings – with eight fours and three sixes – meant York went into the break in a commanding position on 190-3.

A promising opening partnership of 41 between Loten and Harwood Williams proved to be the only bright spot in the visitors' innings.

The departure of Williams (18), caught by Ashdown off Snell at the beginning of the ninth over, sparked a collapse which saw the remaining wickets tumble for the addition of only 49 runs.

Snell struck for a second time in the same over, Woods taking a low catch at mid-on to dismiss Mutada Akhtar without scoring.

The York captain brought himself on to bowl – a move which proved incisive, with the spinner striking in each of his first four overs.

Loten (18) was trapped lbw before return catches from Murphy and opposite number Jack Bolam (17), the only other player to reach double figures, reduced to opposition to 65-5.

Veteran West Indian all-rounder King offered some resistance but his efforts were not matched at the other end, Woods taking his fourth wicket courtesy of Ashdown's catch at deep mid-wicket to remove Oliver Sherwood.

Adam Sutcliffe provided the first of two wickets for Tom Pringle, bowled for a single before Woods struck again, bowling Barrett for two.

Overseas signing Kadeem Edwards, having only recently arrived from Barbados, managed to find the boundary once before being trapped lbw by Pringle, leaving the hosts 11 balls to find the final wicket to claim maximum points.

Brent played out the remainder of Pringle's over and, despite figures of 5-18 form seven overs, Woods threw the ball to Matthew Turnbull to bowl the final over.

It proved inspirational as the tall seamer, making his debut, trapped King lbw with just two balls of the match remaining.
