FIRST it was a seventh successive league title – now York Cricket Club are on the hunt of a trophy double on Sunday.

The Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League champions will bid to add the Yorkshire League Cup to their swollen cabinet by beating bogey team Driffield.

The East Yorkshire outfit are the only side to have had a firm upper-hand on the Clifton Parkers this season, with skipper Dan Woods’ men yet to beat their final opponents.

York lost to Driffield in their opening league game, were soundly defeated by them in the T20 finals competition and saw their second league encounter abandoned due to rain after hitting 266 from 45 overs.

But buoyed by the glory of keeping their hands on the league title for yet another year – and extending their own record – vice-captain Nick Kay says the team are desperate to grab yet more honours.

“The focus on winning this game has been there for quite a long time,” he said. “Firstly because we haven’t performed against Driffield as we would have liked for the last three years and because it is a brand new competition – 45 overs and using the pink ball – and it is quite exciting to be involved in.

“The lads have really taken to it. We had a hard fought victory over the (Yorkshire) Academy in the semi-final and we are looking forward to the final.

“The lads felt that once we had beaten the Academy in the league that it would be difficult to lose it and we have had this game in mind for a long time.

“I think there is a lot of mutual respect between the two teams. They raise their game against us and we are the two most aggressive, attacking sides in the league at the moment.

“They are a credit to the league and, from our point of view, it’s great to continue to be involved in these big games.”

York must first see off Appleby Frodingham in the league tomorrow and, despite the title already residing for another year at Shipton Road, Kay added there would be no resting on laurels as the season winds down.

“We have changed the team slightly mainly because of a couple of us need to have a bat and a bowl before the final,” he said.

“But the usual suspects like Duncan Snell, Jack Leaning and Dan Woods have a lot of personal milestones to play for. Liam McKendry is only just short of 1,000 runs so there will be no complacency. We want to score as many runs and take as many wickets as we can.”

Glen Richmond and Kay drop to the seconds with the full Saturday side yet to be named. Woods is absent on Minor Counties duty with Cheshire on Sunday and Snell will captain the side.

Simon Lambert and Jake Murphy will also come in to the team.
