YORK’S challenge for national t20 glory was left in tatters as they were swept aside by Driffield Town on Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier Cricket League finals day in Scarborough.

The Clifton Parkers missed out on the chance to represent the league in the ECB National t20 competition when Driffield chased down their target of 110.

A batting collapse earlier in the season saw Town emerge victorious when the sides met in the league, and it was a similar story this time around.

York batted first and, despite the early loss of in-form Liam McKendry, they looked well on track when Oliver Hairs hit four consecutive boundaries off Ollie Ezard to take the score to 55 inside the first five overs.

However, attempting another lusty blow off the same bowler, he mistimed the shot and failed to clear Dave Bent at mid-on and had to depart for 31, off 16 balls.

Even though Duncan Snell (21) fell to a smart catch by George Drury in the next over, 60 from the first six overs should have proved a solid platform.

But York had no answer to accurate bowling from Nick Hardgrave and Brent, who conceded only 26 runs from eight overs while sharing three wickets.

Simon Lambert was the only other batsman to make double figures. His run-a-ball 31 was a valiant effort until he ran out of partners as the side were all out with eight balls unused.

Driffield never looked in danger as Sam Drury (36) and Mark Clarkson (23) got them off to a flying start and they were halfway to victory when the first wicket fell.

Ryan McKendry picked up the first of his three wickets when Sam Drury drove straight to Nick Kay at mid-on. Clarkson followed soon after and the spinner’s final success came when Hardgrave picked out Snell at mid-wicket but by then only 27 were required for victory from 54 balls.

Doncaster overcame Sheffield Collegiate in the second semi-final before they were beaten by Driffield, who go into the regional final at York’s Clifton Park on Sunday, August 11.
