Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon has been hailed as one of the two best coaches in county cricket by his peers.

A former opening batsman for the White Rose county and England, the 50-year-old came out top alongside Nottinghamshire coach Mick Newell in a poll carried out by the Wisden Cricketer magazine.

Some 17 out of the 18 county coaches voted in the magazine’s April edition as part of a wider preview to the new domestic season, and Moxon and Newell gained three votes each.

Leicestershire coach Phil Whitticase was one of the coaches who voted for Moxon, and he was quoted as saying: “Moxon for being very organised and knowledgeable. He has the right values and a good track record for bringing young players through.”

Moxon, who also coached Durham between 2001 and 2007, has carefully moulded a squad capable of winning silverware since his return to Headingley.

He has provided a number of players with the stepping-stone to the England senior ranks, most notably Adil Rashid, Tim Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad, while there are currently a number of others within his squad knocking on the door.

Moxon said: “I’ve never had anything like that before. If your peers are appreciating what you do, then it’s a nice honour. I’m delighted that it’s the case.

“I’m pretty ambitious. I want the teams that I’m in charge of to be very successful – and for players to develop and go on to bigger and better things.

“It’s nice to be recognised by the people from within the game. It means quite a lot to me.”

Notts’ coach Newell has spent the last two months as part of the coaching staff for the England Lions on their tour of the Caribbean.

And Moxon admitted he would love to be involved at international level himself at some point in the future.

“Ultimately I’d like to be involved in international cricket in some capacity,” he said.

“But, to do that, I need to be successful at county level first. That’s what I’m putting all my time and efforts into trying to do.

“If you do get some success here, who knows what might happen down the line. I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t want to work with international players at some point in the future.”

Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, one of the players Moxon has nurtured, also paid tribute to his coach.

The 27-year-old added: “I think he’s an excellent coach. I’ve got such a great relationship with him. The one between a captain and coach is so vitally important.

“He’s a grounded bloke, he’s calm – he adds that to the team – he’s passionate about Yorkshire cricket, and he has a knack of bringing players into the side at exactly the right time.

“That showed last year at various time. His demeanour settles the younger players a lot, allowing them to flourish in the roles that they’ve been given.”

• Ashes winner Tim Bresnan will be taking the ball that claimed the final wicket at MCG over the winter to the All Rounder cricket store at Headingley on Friday between 6pm and 7pm.

He will be available for autographs and photos.
