Yorkshire’s assistant coach Craig White has cited personal reasons for turning down the chance to replace Allan Donald as Warwickshire’s bowling coach earlier this winter.

White also revealed that the opportunity to step up from his position as second team coach and captain at Headingley was too tempting.

He explained: “Ashley Giles came up to me last year when we were at Scarborough and asked me ‘what are your plans?’ I told him that I hadn’t been offered the Yorkshire job, that I was still captain of the seconds.

“He asked me if we could have a meeting. I agreed. When we did, he asked me to do Allan Donald’s job, the bowling coach, which would effectively be Ashley’s assistant.

“I’ve known Gilo a long time, I’ve toured a lot with him, and I thought about it for a long time. I was very close to going. In the end, through personal reasons and being offered a job at Yorkshire, I decided to stay.”

White will be with the Yorkshire first team squad on a full-time basis, and will take charge of affairs when Martyn Moxon is away watching second team and academy matches.

Continued the ex-England all-rounder: “It’s an exciting time here. I dealt with all the young lads in the second team, and I really enjoyed it. To help them progress in the first team is my next challenge.”

White saw Yorkshire win the first one-day match on their tour of Barbados on Tuesday, beating the University of the West Indies by 52 runs at the Foursquare ground.

The White Rose – rocked by the news locum overseas bowler Daryl Tuffey will not be coming to Headingley after breaking his left hand while playing for New Zealand against Australia – were bowled out for 243 by the students.

Gary Ballance and Adam Lyth pressed their claims. Ballance hit 94 off 91 balls, including six fours and two sixes, while Lyth finished unbeaten on 70 off 87 balls. Yorkshire, though, lost their last seven wickets for 28 runs.

UWI rarely threatened to chase down the target, even though they reached 114-2 in the 26th over.

Left-arm spinner David Wainwright excelled with figures of 2-25 from eight overs as the hosts finished on 191-7.
