Yorkshire have signed one-time Australian one-day international all-rounder Ryan Harris as their overseas player for 2010.

Harris is principally an opening bowler, but has scored five 50s with a best of 94 in his ten-year first-class career.

The 30-year-old is currently contracted to the Queensland Bulls, but has had brief spells in county cricket with Sussex and Surrey, the most recent being in June. He is also contracted to the Deccan Chargers in the IPL.

Recommended to Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket, Martyn Moxon by former Tykes hero Darren Lehmann and ex-England bowling coach Troy Cooley, Harris said: “It’s great to be part of the club for next summer, and I’m really looking forward to the challenge of county cricket.

“When I got the call asking me if I wanted to go and play in Yorkshire I jumped at the chance.

“When I was playing with Darren Lehmann he would come back to Adelaide and always talk about Yorkshire. He really enjoyed his time there. It’s good to be going to what sounds like a very passionate club.”

Harris made his one limited overs appearance against South Africa at Hobart in January, taking one wicket, but a foot injury towards the back end of the 2008/9 Australian season hamstrung his chances of further honours.

He finished last season with 33 wickets for the Bulls, just failing to top the Sheffield Shield bowling charts.

“Ryan comes highly recommended by a number of people in Australia for his all-round abilities,” said Moxon.

“He is an opening bowler who is also useful with the bat and an outstanding fielder. I’m delighted that Ryan is able to be with us for the whole season once his IPL commitments have been fulfilled.”

The signing of Harris goes some way to making up for the loss of Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Deon Kruis and Matthew Hoggard.
