MARTYN MOXON and Deon Kruis have both urged Yorkshire’s players to come up with better plans against Lancashire in the return match at Headingley tomorrow night.

The White Rose were given a “good hiding”, according to South African bowler Kruis, in the Twenty20 Cup North Division clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

After posting just 105-8 from their 20 overs, Yorkshire’s fate was sealed by six wickets with 27 balls to spare.

“We have had a good look at Lancashire now, and hopefully we will have better plans to combat them,” said director of professional cricket Moxon.

“We want to go back to the drawing board to find different plans against their bowlers and batters. Hopefully we can turn the tables on them,” said Kruis, who was one of the few highlights in Manchester with figures of 2-18 from 3.2 overs.

After a day to themselves, mulling over their own contributions to the defeat, Yorkshire’s squad return to training today.

There were a couple of bright spots in the defeat, one of them being Michael Vaughan’s career-best 36, the other being Yorkshire’s early fightback with the ball to reduce the hosts to 41-3.

But, otherwise, nothing went their way. Andrew Gale planted the first ball of the match, a full toss from occasional leg-spinner Francois du Plessis, down Steven Croft’s throat at deep square-leg before Croft completed a stunning catch to get rid of Vaughan.

“It was an outstanding catch to get rid of Vaughany,” said Moxon.

“Crikey, you will never see a better catch in the history of the game. But we played some poor shots along with some unlucky dismissals. It was a mixed bag, but we weren’t at our best.

“You need everything to go your way. It was a disappointing display for most parts after playing so well on Monday.

“Sometimes that is the nature of Twenty20, but we have a couple of days to work out how we can play better on Friday.

“We have got to get back to doing what we did well on Monday.”

Kruis added: “Losing Andrew Gale first ball didn’t help.

“They sprung a bit of a surprise on us by opening the bowling with du Plessis.

“We batted not as well as we wanted to, and 100 was always going to be a tough score to defend for us.” Changes will almost certainly be made for Yorkshire’s third match this week.

Tim Bresnan is available after England Test and one-day international duty.

Yorkshire may even take Lancashire’s lead and bring in an extra spinner in Adil Rashid or Azeem Rafiq. Adam Lyth and Ajmal Shahzad could be the men under threat for their places.
