Rowntrees & Huntington showed their inconsistency when a batting failure had them all out for 80 at Civil Service, whose Sam Dodds took 5-34 and Travis Crouch 3-39.

Nick Olney’s 30no then took Service to a comfortable eight-wicket win in division four of the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League.

Teenager Mark Johnson was the Fenner 2nd XI hero with his 4-9 in 11 overs helping his team to bowl out Malton and Old Malton 2nds for 104 in 43 overs.

Max Fraser (25) topping the run-scoring chart for the North Yorkshire visitors on a rain sodden Marfeet ground.

In reply, Johnson (17no) and Phil Rusling (16no) held their nerve to edge their side to a narrow two-wicket win at 105-8 in the 42nd over, after Adam Michaels (32) hit the highest score of the day, despite the effort of Malton’s Ryan Gaughan (3-25).

Pickering pulled off the shock win of the day when they ensured divisional security by beating promoted Hull Zingari by 40 runs.

Pickering were inserted and made slow progress against Adam Brown 2-27 and Jon Hyde 3-27. A watchful innings of 32 from under 15 Matthew Butler and an enterprising 36 from successful intermediate captain Tim Whincup rallied the total to a modest 149 all out inside 44 overs.

In reply, Zingari collapsed to 19-5, shaken by some hostile early fire from Yorkshire Schools’ under-15 opening bowler Keiron Bowes (3-22) and Haydon Jackson (4-16). Then two wickets in as many deliveries from skipper Adrian Boyes helped skittle Hull for 109 all out.

The top two division five sides, Heworth and Selby, clashed aware that a defeat or a poor draw would deny them promotion if third-placed Sheriff Hutton Bridge won their final game.

Selby were dismissed for only 82 as Guy Wilkinson took 3-22 and Graham Knott 2-11. Heworth’s Paul Neal steered his side to the title with an unbeaten 30 for a six-wicket victory.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge’s bid for promotion started unpromisingly at Welton & Brough, who posted 60-0. But then David Speake started the rot with 4-17 backed by Dave Gilbertson’s 4-21.

Mike Smith’s 33 was decisive as the Bridge maintained their unbeaten record and moved above Selby to claim the runners-up prize.

In division six, Copmanthorpe completed their first season in the league with a six-wicket win over Pocklington.

Pocklington’s 124 owed much to Peter Powell’s undefeated 39 as Alistair Byers took 4-26. N Hill (3-12) then took three of the four home wickets to fall but solid contributions from Sandeep Bhargava with 48 and N Hawley 47no earned the hosts full points.
