HEWORTH’S promotion hopes took a major knock as they lost to second-placed Fenner in division one of the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League.

Hosts Fenner virtually ended the challenge of third-placed Heworth, their seven-wicket win opening up a 77-point gap over their opponents.

Oliver Sherwood top-scored for the York side with 45, while Gary Hall was unbeaten with 44.

There were wickets for home bowlers Luke Leybourne, Steve Sergeant and Stephen Croft, while Ryan Kirk conceded only 15 runs in an economical 12-over stint.

Ross Davy then hit an unbeaten 64 when Fenner clocked up their 11th victory.

Freddie Coughlin took 2-21 for the losers.

Pickering’s batsmen failed badly at Goole, where they were bowled out for only 97 before going on to lose by five wickets.

Dave Greenlay made 26 as the Pikes moved to a comfortable 60-1 before the wheels came off.

The chief architect of the collapse was Steven Smith, who produced seasonal best figures of 6-21.

With Dave England taking 3-24, the visitors failed to earn a single batting point.

After the break, Ryan Boyes claimed 3-24 but Ben Earl’s unbeaten 55 steered Goole to a winning 100-5.

Harrogate lost by eight wickets at Folkton & Flixton and the result confirmed their relegation back to division two.

George Owram hit 70 and Rob Taylor 56 in Harrogate’s total of 161-5. Their efforts were nullified as Richard Malthouse (53no) and Scott Cooper (61no) formed a match-winning alliance that moved Flixton into fourth place.

Hull Zingari’s Jack Storey became the first player to score 1,000 runs in the season since 2011 when his 79 against Driffield took his aggregate to 1,008 at an average of 78.

With Anthony Knowles hitting 54, Zingari posted a total of 248-9, despite the efforts of Jamie Hopper (3-59) and Rob Woodcock (3-78).

J Robinson then made 57 and Tim Norman 39 as Driffield drew at 152-6.

In division two, rain ruined Thirsk’s trip to Clifton Alliance.

Des Wyrill made 37 for Thirsk and Kieron Fenwick hit 71 in a total of 218-9, despite Alistair Wray’s 5-48. Wicketkeeper Rory Walker grabbed five victims.

Alliance’s reply was restricted to 22-1 before the elements took control.

Hornsea kept their promotion hopes alive with a seven-wicket home triumph over York.

For the visitors, Ben Horseman and K Blooper each made 25 but York’s knock was terminated on 131. Hornsea won at 134-3, despite Tom Patmore’s 2-44.

Bolton Percy’s Tom Atkinson hit one of the day’s highest scores when he made an unbeaten 126 in his side’s formidable total of 243-6 at Hull. He was supported by Joe White, with 35.

Hull were then dismissed for 169 as Phil Malloch claimed 3-54.

Leaders Londesborough Park suffered a home defeat at the hands of Tadcaster Magnet and now lead the division by only three points from a Malton & Old Malton side who were denied the chance of taking over as front-runners when their game against Woodhouse Grange was a non-starter.

Paul Downey (4-22) and Paul Clark (3-35) bowled Park out for 109, with Simon Dodd making 38.

Tadcaster’s batsmen also struggled but Phil Smith’s 24 helped them to a winning 112-6.

Bottom pair Thorp Arch & Boston Spa and Welton & Brough were foiled by the weather. Despite taking nine points, Thorp Arch were relegated.
