PREMIER League legend Dion Dublin doesn’t see why York City boss Gary Mills can’t have his cake and eat it this season, starting with a trip to Doncaster with the Capital One Cup tomorrow.

There is a tendency for newly-promoted clubs to prioritise their league campaign over cup glory in order to consolidate in a higher league first time up.

The Minstermen ended their eight-year absence from the Football League thanks to a 2-1 play-off final win over Luton at Wembley in May.

But before York can get their teeth sunk into League Two with the visit of Wycombe to Bootham Crescent on August 18, a trip to Doncaster in the Capital One Cup is first up for Mills and his side.

And former frontman Dublin, who also has four England caps to his name, is urging Mills to carry the momentum over from promotion in order to hit the ground running in the league.

“York have momentum, but they are heading up into a league that is of a great deal more quality, with a lot better players,” Dublin said.

“If they could nick a draw against Doncaster that would be a great result for them and would help carry that feel-good factor over into the league.

“Besides, it is all very well going out and getting a one-off result, but the aim for them is to be consistent in the league.

“If that means they have to get some results in the cup as well, all the better for them and I really feel that a strong cup run can have a really good effect.

“In a cup game, there is a different mentality and it will be interesting to see who comes through.”

York are no strangers to a cup run, last year’s play-off final victory their second win at Wembley in just over a week after lifting the FA Trophy by beating Newport County eight days earlier.

And Dublin, who was involved in his own cup runs with Cambridge in the FA Cup in 1990 and 1991, believes this played a part in City’s promotion, and is adamant the club should be looking to repeat their heroics this year round.

“Cup runs give a sense of excitement and, hopefully, gets people through the turnstiles as well and I am convinced York’s trip to Wembley in the Trophy gave them momentum for promotion,” he added.

“Hopefully the club can build on that and there will be a snowball effect, with the crowds staying high and everybody looking forward to the next round with a sense of expectation.

“It is all about starting well and if that is through a cup game, so be it. It is very important to get new players bedded in and getting them playing in the right way so that the manager is happy.”
