Full time role for York City assistant manager Darron Gee

Darron Gee Darron Gee

YORK City assistant manager Darron Gee will take a pay cut to turn full-time at Bootham Crescent next season.

Gee has been working with City chief Gary Mills on a part-time basis since October 2010 but has decided to give up his well-paid job outside of the game to concentrate on Minstermen matters in 2012/13.

The former Tamworth and Dunkirk manager has been combining work as Mills’ number two with his directorship of a security camera company but he insisted that taking a drop in earnings required little soul-searching.

He said: “The chairman has drafted a contract for me to have a look at and, if everything is okay, I will be signing it. I’ve already agreed the deal in principle and I’ve just got to see it in black and white now.

“The offer the chairman has made me is a great one and I am pleased he feels I am worthy of it. It’s probably obvious that I will be earning less money as it’s very rare that, if you are leaving a good job behind to go full-time in football, it will work out the other way round unless you’re going to a Championship or Premier League team.

“The chairman said that the negotiations with myself would probably be the hardest he did this summer but I have spoken to my family and they are totally behind me and understand what I am doing. It was not a hard decision to make in terms of my career in football.”

Gee is also fuelled by a desire to silence any critics who might still doubt his and Mills’ credentials after the pair were relieved of their duties at Notts County just three months into their first taste of League football together eight years ago.

“I have a young family but it’s always been my aim to go full-time with Gary again,” the 49-year-old coach added.

“We have a massive point to prove after what happened at Notts County, where we were never given a chance to show exactly what we can do. We’ve got a great opportunity to do that now at a fantastic club.”

On the benefits that Gee’s extended hours at Bootham Crescent will bring to the club, he added: “I will be at the ground every day now, which will take a bit of pressure off Gary in terms of the day-to-day running of the club.

“Sometimes players need to see different faces and it’s good to freshen up training regimes. We dealt with that well last season but there were times when I could not get to the ground and that won’t be the case now.

“I can also go to more games to look at young players and potential signings in reserve games or Gary can do that and I can take care of stuff at the ground.”

Well done Darron and best of luck with the future.
But please York Press get rid of that picture or at least pixelate that awful reminder of the past.

Nothing to do with this story but just heard on Radio York the Stadium/Shopping Project is to go ahead ...great news but my only worry is 6000 capacity.....I really fear this is not big enough if we are to progress.

Tips having attended BC for the last 8 seasons sat with 2-2500 supporters for that time 6000 would appear to be sufficient.
Yes in the long term a greater capacity might be required but the future must be secured now with the support we know we have, yes lg 1 and above would be fantastic but only sustainable with a fan base to match so steady as she goes better to have a full ground than an expensive unsustainable facility like Darlo.

i too am a little concerned by having a stadium with a limited capacity of 6000 but i think joe jamestom says point is very important if its reasonably easy and not massivley expensive to increase the capacity its probably the right way to go,Darlo,s experience being very relevant.

Given that it will take a time for the stadium to get off the ground, I suggest that we take this next season (or two) as an idea of where our average attendance is likely to be. If we have a good season and the crowds turn out, or we get promoted and are likely to get bigger crowds then that is the time to start thinking about increasing the capacity.

If that small side stand is left till last there is no reason why we can't be playing in the ground whilst that is constructed.

Having past Falkirk's ground on a number of occasions, when it was being built, I note that they started with one massive stand and gradually built the rest (all for Celtic and Rangers fans by the look of Falkirk's avv gate).

If it has a running track around it, it will be dreadful. I have the worst possible feelings about these plans... all seater, out of town, running track, small capacity, attached to a shopping centre like some tacky afterthought... I can't see it being anything other than a blight on our club. Other options should have been explored more fully before this decision was inexplicably pushed forward, it will be the ruin of our club. I'd be less worried if the club went part time and stayed at BC, at least there is the option of going back fulltime - once we move to a new stadium, there will be no way back.

Shaw has signed for the money at Luton like lazy Parkin has at Fleetwood. In that case we didn't want either of them. We are about Football and wanting to play for York City.As far as grounds are concerned when Oxford got their new stadium one end was left empty with the Chairman then saying when you fill the 3 sides I'll do the fourth. Still empty!

There was one on the artist's conception wasn't there? I could well be wrong! I thought we would be sharing with the athletics club though.

Which is best. Security Cameras or York City. There's only one way to find out. "Take a pay cut". Well done Darron.
