DAN PARSLOW says his York City team-mates should not underestimate their achievement after they ended the club’s eight-year hiatus out of the Football League.

Sunday’s Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final win over Luton at Wembley ended a memorable week for the Minstermen, following the FA Trophy triumph under the arch a week earlier and the planning victory which has given the go-ahead for a new community stadium.

Parslow, City’s longest-serving player on the Wembley turf and twice a Clubman of the Year having joined in 2006 from Cardiff, where he never quite broke into the first team, said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling.

“What we’ve done, to get back up to the Football League, is a huge achievement and every one of us is ecstatic.

“It’s what you want. I’ve been close (to playing in the Football League) a few times but to get there by winning at Wembley – the best place in football – it doesn’t get much better.”

Parslow played a key role in the victory, too, flicking on Lanre Oyebanjo’s long throw-in for forward Matty Blair to poke home the winner early in the second half.

Replays showed Blair was offside, but Parslow joked: “I’m glad it was given as I got an assist for that.

“You get some decisions and you don’t get some.

“That was maybe a little bit of luck but we deserved it.

“If it was offside then maybe we were fortunate, but I feel we created some chances and I think we deserved it over the course of the season.

“Many teams have complimented us on the quality of football we’ve played.

“We finished with 83 points and that’s a great achievement.

“We all knew we needed to finish the job, and we got past Mansfield (in the play-off semi-finals) and then we beat Luton. It’s just fantastic.”

Welshman Parslow played Sunday’s showdown as a holding midfielder, having featured in his recognised centre-back role in the FA Trophy final.

Said the 26-year-old: “The gaffer named the team about midday so you had a bit of time to get focused on it. I’ve played there a few times this season.

“I suppose with Chris (Doig) being fit again it crossed my mind that I might get pushed into midfield. I enjoyed it.

“It was the worst possible start (Luton scored after 71 seconds) but we showed the character we’ve been showing all season.

“We never gave up and we scored at the right time and that got our tails up. Then we scored early in the second half.

“They put pressure on us towards the end but I wouldn’t say we were hanging on. We contained them quite well.

“It was a tough scrap, but I thought all over the pitch we matched them and we got what we deserved.”
