OLD Malton St Mary’s are the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division champions.

The Ryedale side’s 2-0 win at Wilberfoss on Saturday ended their 11-year wait for a top flight title.

After two second and two third place finishes in the last five years, Saints are celebrating their first championship since 2001 on the back on a 27-match unbeaten run.

Dean Readman headed St Mary’s into a half-time lead at ’Foss.

Their advantage should have been doubled, but Neil Wilford’s spot kick was saved by ’keeper Richard Cole.

Three minutes into the second period John Newton scored and Old Malton played out time before receiving the trophy from league chairman John Jeffery.

Easingwold Town staved off the threat of relegation with a 1-0 home win over Dringhouses. Adam Paterson scored the all-important goal to leave Wilberfoss, Riccall and Keystones to battle against the drop.

Riccall earned a vital point with a 2-2 draw at Dunnington.

The hosts led through goals from Scott Sullivan – his 33rd of the campaign – and Tom Richards, but Riccall levelled through Michael Braithwaite and Jeremy James.

Poppleton wrapped up their season with a 2-0 defeat at York RI.

Lee Powell and Darren Sellars were the hosts’ marksmen.

The fight for promotion from division one is still not resolved as both Amotherby and Malton & Norton failed to collect the points they required to join the top flight.

Amotherby needed to avoid defeat at Selby RSSC to confirm their promotion and end their opponents’ hopes, but they lost 2-1. Chris Coxen and James Barrett netted for Selby. Alan Gudthorpe pulled a goal back.

With Amotherby losing, a win for Malton & Norton over St Clement’s would have seen the Ryedale side rubbing shoulders with neighbours Old Malton next season.

However, the game finished 2-2 with Chris McCluskie scoring twice for St Clement’s either side of goals by Liam Burdett and Simon Reeves.

Selby must win their remaining two games and improve their goal difference by 11 to deny Amotherby the promotion spot.

Church Fenton White Horse received the division two championship from Colin Atkinson, the league’s fixtures and referees’ appointments secretary, after they clinched the title with a convincing 4-1 home win over Stamford Bridge.

John Marshall added to his tally with a brace and there were goals for Jake Longstaff and Rob McQuarry. Nathan Spreckley responded for the visitors.

Division three champions Tadcaster Magnets conceded their first goal in over eight hours but extended their unbeaten run to 35 games with a 5-1 win at Elvington.

Tom Shelvin netted for Elvington, while the Magnets haul was shared between Adam Standridge (2), Joe Smith, Ben Wilson and Gary Simpson. Selby Olympia’s Andy Woodhall finished the season on a high as he hit four goals in a 6-1 home win over Civil Service. Martin Househam and Dale Ranby completed the scoring, with Lee Richardson responding.
