AN army of York support will be backing boxer Lee Stewart when he goes to ‘War’ on Saturday night.

The 21-year-old has already sold 140 tickets for his third professional fight against journeyman lightweight Johnny Greaves at the Magna Centre in Rotherham.

Top of the bill on the show dubbed ‘The War’ by promotor David Coldwell is former York City junior Curtis Woodhouse against Jason Cook at light welterweight.

The undercard also includes Ryan Rhodes’ first fight since his failed WBC light middleweight title bid against Saul Alvarez in June. He fights Siarhei Khomitski in South Yorkshire.

Trainer Glenn Banks wants Stewart to add to his pro experience in the four three-minute rounds contest against 32-year-old Greaves, who has won only three of his 74 paid bouts.

Southpaw Greaves, of East Ham, in London, has already fought 11 times this year, but is known as a durable opponent, having only been knocked out ten times in his career.

Banks said: “Lee is only 21 and it is all about learning the trade and getting bouts under his belt before taking him up to the next level.

“Lee is boxing a tough southpaw, who has had 70 fights. He is the type of fighter who could turn up and win. He has been in with everybody and always seems to go the distance.

“The training camp has gone pretty well and the sparring has been good. He is in good shape for Saturday.”

Stewart, dubbed Lightning Lee, beat Dan Carr on points on his pro debut at York’s Energise in May and then out-pointed Kristian Laight at the Barnsley Metrodome in September.

The sale of 140 tickets for Saturday’s contest proves the Clifton cuffer’s growing popularity. Said Banks: “We would like to thank all 140 who’ve bought tickets. That’s brilliant support for Lee.”

Tickets are still available by phoning Stewart on 07907 236089 or Banks on 07842 464466.
