YORK City manager Gary Mills hailed a “tremendous” display during last night’s 2-2 home draw against Darlington.

But the Minstermen chief also told his side they must eliminate the errors that cost them maximum points.

Jamie Reed gave City an early lead at Bootham Crescent, but James Walshaw replied and Marc Bridge-Wilkinson gave the Quakers a half-time lead after Mills’ men gave away their fifth penalty in as many games. It took a terrific 79th-minute goal by top scorer Jason Walker – watched by League One side Sheffield Wednesday – to earn City a share of the spoils.

And Mills said: “I’m delighted with a point but there’s also a tinge of disappointment because we gave them two goals.

“If we hadn’t got anything out of the game, it would have been a travesty and I was gobsmacked to be going in 2-1 down at half-time but that’s football and we’ve just got to cut the mistakes out because, when you are dominating games, you can’t make mistakes at the back to give teams a chance. Jamal dived in for the first and we gave a penalty away. Other than that, I couldn’t see them scoring and I thought we were tremendous.

“We started very brightly, forced the issue and never gave up. It was an absolutely superb finish by Jason Walker to get us a point and Reedy’s was a great finish as well.”

Mills went on to pay tribute to the home crowd’s vocal support and called on the fans to repeat their efforts when top-of-the-table Luton arrive in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

He said: “The crowd was superb last night. It was an electric atmosphere. They never got on the players’ backs when we went behind and kept going until the end of the match. Luton are sitting top now and they are coming here on Saturday.

“I can’t wait and I want the same adrenalin that we felt at last night’s match for that game.”
